How to Make Puff Pastry Swirls with Pastry Cream and Chocolate Chips
To make the puff pastry swirls with cream and chocolate, start by preparing the pastry cream: you can follow the recipe found here but halve all the doses (1); if you prefer, you can cook it in the microwave as indicated here. Once ready, let it cool to room temperature. When cold, unroll the puff pastry and, using a spatula, spread it with the pastry cream forming an even layer (2). Distribute the chocolate chips on top (3), keeping some aside to decorate the surface of the swirls.
Roll the puff pastry onto itself, starting from one of the shorter sides (4). As you roll, press gently to compact it. Seal all edges well (5) and wrap the roll in parchment paper. Let it rest in the fridge for half an hour. The fridge rest isn’t essential, but it will help make the roll more compact and easier to cut. After half an hour, remove the roll from the fridge, discard the parchment paper, and with a knife, cut it into 15 swirls, approximately 1.5 cm thick (6).
Place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, well-spaced from one another (7). Decorate with the reserved chocolate chips (8). Bake the puff pastry swirls in a preheated static oven at 392°F, for 20-25 minutes. When they are puffed and golden, remove from the oven (9) and let them cool slightly.
The puff pastry swirls with cream and chocolate are excellent both warm and cold; serve them for breakfast or as a snack. Placed in a lunch box, they can also be a tasty snack to put in the children’s backpack as they return to school these days!
Storage
You can store the puff pastry swirls at room temperature for a couple of days.
Tips and Variations
This recipe is versatile and can be adapted as desired: instead of chocolate chips, you can use raisins previously soaked for 10 minutes in water and well-drained, creating treats similar to Danish pastries; or hazelnut or almond crumbs. Or you could add a bit of Nutella, spread over the cream layer. The classic pastry cream can be replaced with chocolate, lemon or orange versions.
