Chestnut and Speck Bites

Simple and tasty chestnut and speck bites, a quick idea to serve as an appetizer or finger food for an aperitif. The recipe is very easy, and if you have pre-boiled chestnuts it is prepared in a few minutes… just wrap them in speck slices and roast everything in the oven or air fryer. These rolls are so tasty that you can’t stop at one, try them too!

Ingredients

  • 20 chestnuts, boiled
  • 10 slices speck
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • sage (to taste)

Preparation

  • If you don’t have pre-boiled chestnuts, cook the chestnuts in salted boiling water for about 50 minutes. Drain them, immerse them in cold water, then peel them removing also the skin.

  • Place the speck slices on the work surface and cut them in half lengthwise.

    Put one chestnut on each half slice of speck (1), then roll up to form bundles.

  • Place the bites on a baking tray and drizzle them with a little extra virgin olive oil (2).

  • Put the tray in a fan oven at 350-375°F and cook for 10-15 minutes, until the speck is roasted.

    To save time, you can use an air fryer: place the bites in a small pan or directly in the basket, then cook at 350°F for 5 minutes.

  • Chestnut and speck bites are ready, serve them hot, perfuming to taste with a few sage leaves.

Tips and Notes

For this preparation, I recommend using boiled chestnuts, roasted ones may become too dry after the oven step.

You can substitute speck with lean smoked bacon. The slices must still be very thin, otherwise the rolls will tend to open.
