This ham and cheese casserole is perfect for a rustic dinner or a snack with friends. It’s like a large baked toast, enriched with a delicious egg-based mixture that makes it a truly satisfying dish. The preparation is very simple and, I assure you, it always gets lots of compliments. Indeed, the combination of ham and cheese also works well with pane Carasau and puff pastry. So, if you also like to serve dishes like these at the table, don’t miss the recipe.

Ingredients for the Ham and Cheese Casserole
For this casserole, I used slices of soft bread, the kind used for American sandwiches. Alternatively, bread loaf works just fine.
- 14 oz soft sliced bread (about 10 slices)
- 6 oz emmental (thinly sliced)
- 3 eggs (medium)
- 1/2 cup fresh liquid cream
- 4 oz cooked ham (thinly sliced)
- 1 oz Grana Padano cheese (or Parmesan, grated)
- nutmeg
- extra virgin olive oil
- salt
- black pepper
Tools
- 1 Baking dish 12 x 9 inches
- 1 Bowl
- 1 Hand whisk
Preparation of the Ham and Cheese Casserole
Line the bottom and sides of a 12 x 9 inch baking dish with parchment paper. Then arrange the slices of bread on the bottom, cutting them to size if necessary.
Cover them with slices of emmental: for convenience, I used pre-sliced emmental. If you can’t find it, I recommend grating the same amount of emmental, as it is quite difficult to obtain thin slices with a knife.
Crack the eggs into a bowl, add a generous pinch of salt, a good grind of black pepper, and a generous grating of nutmeg, and whisk everything with a small hand whisk until the yolks and whites are combined.
Add the cream and mix again until a homogeneous mixture is obtained.
Pour part of this mixture over the cheese slices.
At this point, cover with slices of cooked ham and pour over a little more of the egg mixture.
Make a second layer of bread slices and brush the remaining mixture on top.
Finally, sprinkle the entire surface with the grated cheese.
Bake the ham and cheese casserole in a preheated static oven at 392°F for 20 minutes or until the surface is nicely golden. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy! Paola
