The savory swirls….. Do you need to improvise an appetizer for a last-minute dinner? Or do you have guests for the holidays and are looking for a quick appetizer for a New Year’s Eve with friends? Here’s the solution!
It’s a simple and delightful tartine that we can customize from time to time by changing the filling. Maybe we can use raw ham or salami, or even better, smoked salmon, but also simple olive pâté.
Try them with the combinations you like best and serve them to entertain your guests, perhaps before starting dinner.
They are one of those inexpensive and impressive appetizers that allow us to bring to the table scenic and delicious treats with a few simple ingredients and a few steps.
We prepared the savory swirls with salmon, spreadable cheese, and sweet paprika, quick snacks with cooked ham, mayonnaise, and olives, concluding with tuna sauce, tomatoes, and mozzarella.
Spread the bread, fill it, roll it up, and then slice everything to get our finger food.
Versatile and original, stuffed savory swirls are perfect for a standing dinner, a buffet, or a colorful and impactful aperitif.
We can also prepare them if we’re looking for a quick appetizer for occasions when we have many guests and want to offer different options to satisfy everyone’s tastes.

- 2 slices cooked ham
- as needed mayonnaise
- 3 cherry tomatoes (for garnish)
- as needed tuna sauce
- 6 cherry tomatoes
- as needed olives (green and black)
- 2.11 oz smoked salmon
- 2.11 oz fresh spreadable cheese
- as needed sweet paprika
- 5 capers (flower)
Tools
- Rolling Pin
- Food Wrap
Steps
Savory Swirls
Let’s start with the salmon swirls: lightly roll out a slice of sandwich bread with a rolling pin, then spread the creamy cheese, keeping some aside.
Place the salmon slices on top of the cheese.
Starting from one of the short sides of the rectangle, roll it up and then wrap the roll with plastic wrap.
Let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes, then remove the plastic wrap.
Use the remaining cheese and spread it over the surface of the roll.
Slice the roll to obtain the salmon swirls.
Sprinkle with sweet paprika and garnish with a caper flower.
Roll out the second slice of bread as well with the rolling pin, then spread it with mayonnaise, keeping some aside.
Cover with slices of cooked ham.
Form a roll as we did earlier and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes wrapped in plastic wrap.
Remove the plastic wrap and spread the remaining mayonnaise over the roll.
Roll the mayonnaise-covered part in the finely chopped olive crumbs.
Slice the roll to obtain cooked ham swirls.
Repeating for the last slice of bread the same steps. Roll out the bread and spread it with tuna sauce, saving some for later.
Then arrange slices of cherry tomatoes and finely chopped black olives, roll it up, then wrap in plastic wrap and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Remove the plastic wrap, spread the remaining tuna sauce, and adhere the olive crumbs.
Slice this roll into rounds with a sharp knife.
Now we have our savory swirls ready in all three versions, arrange them on a serving platter and serve!
Enjoy your meal.
Tips
When our roll has firmed up, we take it out of the fridge and slice it, creating the swirls. The thickness will be about 0.39/0.59 inches.
They can be prepared in advance, but be careful if you use too juicy tomatoes; they may make the bread too wet; change the filling.
