The puff pastry star is a savory star-shaped pie, this savory delight is a symphony of flavors and textures that capture attention and win over all palates!
A very simple recipe with only three ingredients: puff pastry, ham, and cheese.
An idea that’s quick but very scenic for organizing a quick appetizer, a buffet, or to bring to a friend’s house for an evening of fun.
The main ingredient, ready-to-use puff pastry, becomes the canvas on which to paint a gastronomic masterpiece. You just need to roll it out and fill it with the arrangement of the other ingredients. For this recipe, I used: ricotta, grated Parmesan, and lots of cooked ham.
It’s possible to vary the filling of the savory pie according to your tastes using ricotta and spinach, olive paté, grilled vegetables, speck and brie, and whatever your imagination suggests!
The savory puff pastry star is ideal for any occasion, from informal dinners to festive buffets. Its versatility allows for infinite customizations, adapting to the tastes and preferences of those who prepare it.
Have fun following the step-by-step tutorial to make it perfect and change the filling to whatever you prefer. Accompanied by a fresh salad or a side of grilled vegetables, it will become a complete and satisfying dish. But, above all, it will be the perfect centerpiece for Christmas or New Year’s Eve!

Ingredients
Puff Pastry Star
- 2 puff pastry (round)
- 5.3 oz ricotta
- 5.3 oz cream cheese
- 1.8 oz Parmesan
- 5.3 oz cooked ham
- 1 egg yolk (with a tablespoon of milk for brushing)
- as needed sesame (seeds)
Tools
- Baking Tray
- Brush
Steps
Puff Pastry Star
Unroll the first puff pastry disc, leaving it on its baking paper.
Spread a generous layer of ricotta mixed with previously smoothed and spreadable cream cheese.
(Use your preferred ricotta).
Lay the ham slices on top and a generous sprinkle of grated cheese without going beyond the edges.
Place the second disc of puff pastry on top, trying to perfectly align the edges by pinching them slightly.
In the center of the savory pie, place a bowl with a diameter of at least 6 inches, not too small, otherwise you won’t get the star shape.
Cut the pastry forming an imaginary cross, then make 4 more cuts, dividing the obtained wedges in half, and then 4 more cuts to obtain 16 perfectly equal wedges.
Remove the cup from the center of the pie and transfer to a baking sheet with all the baking paper.
Take two wedges at a time and twist them outward (i.e., one to the right and the other in the opposite direction) and make the central part match, arranging them well once rolled.
Take the obtained tips and pinch the extreme edges, bringing the excess dough pieces underneath and giving them a pointed shape.
Proceed in this way with all the wedges.
Brush your star with a lightly beaten yolk with a tablespoon of milk and garnish the center with sesame or poppy seeds.
Bake in a preheated oven in static mode at 350°F for about 25 minutes until it is nicely golden on the surface.
Enjoy your meal.
Tips
Your puff pastry star is ready to impress on the Christmas table and to be shared among your guests!
You can modify the filling of your puff pastry star according to your tastes, varying the type of cheese, cold cuts, and other ingredients as you like.
I recommend consuming your puff pastry star freshly baked (warm or at room temperature), while the puff pastry is crisp and the cheese is still melted.
But if you have leftovers, nothing stops you from enjoying it the next day, storing it in the refrigerator covered with plastic wrap and briefly reheating it in the oven before consuming it.
