Gratinated Red Onions

Today I recommend trying this recipe: “Gratinated Red Onions”, a tasty main dish that can also be served as an appetizer or side dish. Today I preferred to serve them as a main dish after a rather rich first course. This type of onion (red) is usually much sweeter than the classic white or golden onion. The breading makes them even more delicious and flavorful, and even though they are just onions, when prepared this way, they become a really special dish. You just have to try it.

Ingredients for Gratinated Red Onions

  • 1.1 lbs red onions
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • as needed parsley
  • 1 tbsp Parmesan (or Pecorino)
  • as needed extra virgin olive oil
  • as needed salt
  • as needed pepper

Steps for Gratinated Red Onions

  • First, peel the onions, then let them cook in boiling water for 10 minutes. Drain and let them cool slightly. Once they’re cool, cut them lengthwise. Oil the bottom of a baking dish with a little oil and place the onions with the cut side facing up.

  • Prepare the breading. In a bowl, pour the breadcrumbs, cheese, finely chopped parsley, a pinch of salt, and pepper. Mix everything well, then season with oil.

  • Add a pinch of salt and pepper to each half onion and cover each with the seasoned breadcrumbs.

  • Add a few drops of oil on the surface and bake at 356 degrees Fahrenheit in a preheated oven for at least 35 minutes.

    Always adjust according to your oven and the size of your onions.

  • After the cooking time, if you want them more golden, you can put them under the grill for a few minutes.

    If you have an air fryer, you can cook them there at 356°F for 10 minutes.
