ROMAN EASTER DONUTS: SOFT AND ORANGE-SCENTED WITHOUT BUTTER

Roman Easter donuts without butter, soft and orange-scented, a simple and quick dessert baked in the oven, perfect for Easter breakfast to dip in milk or to enjoy at the end of a meal with quick Easter cake or with dove cake with chocolate chips.

It’s a mixture between soft shortcrust and rustic cookie, indeed they remind me a lot of the tarts with soft shortcrust. The shortcrust is made without butter but with oil and yogurt and they’re flavored with orange. Just a few ingredients to bring tradition to the table.

However, as with all traditional recipes, there are various versions, but this is a basic recipe that my grandmother prepared every year for Easter just like the Roman Easter sweet pizza and you’ll find no butter or alcohol, just wholesome ingredients ideal even for children.

I recommend trying them, and I’m sure once tasted they will become one of your favorite desserts even if it’s not Easter. But let’s see how to prepare Roman Easter donuts: soft and orange-scented without butter.

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sunflower oil
  • 2 tbsps orange juice (+ grated zest)
  • 1 packet baking powder

Tools

HERE’S WHAT WE NEED TO MAKE THE ROMAN EASTER DESSERT

  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Electric whisk
  • 1 Baking pan
  • Parchment paper

Steps

HOW TO PREPARE LIGHT EASTER DONUTS

  • In a large bowl, beat the eggs with the sugar, add the oil, yogurt, orange juice, and zest.

Finally, add the flour with the sifted baking powder, start kneading with your hands, add flour only if the dough is too sticky.

Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/2 inch, using a round cookie cutter, cut out circles and then make a hole in the center.

Place the donuts on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, sprinkle a little granulated sugar on top and then some powdered sugar.

Bake at 350°F for about 15/20 minutes in a fan oven. Remove from the oven and dust again with powdered sugar.

ALTERNATIVE: you can make long cylinders, cut them, and close them into donuts.

TIPS FOR SOFT AND FRAGRANT DONUTS

YOU CAN ALSO ADD CINNAMON, USE BROWN SUGAR AND ANY TYPE OF YOGURT. REMEMBER THIS IS A BASIC RECIPE THAT MY GRANDMOTHER MADE, SHE DIDN’T ADD ANYTHING, BUT IF YOU WANT TO MAKE THEM MORE DELICIOUS, ADD SOME CHOCOLATE CHIPS.
