Hot Dog Buns

Special recipe today: hot dog buns!

Michael, 4 and a half, “Mom, can we have a romantic dinner?” Me, with heart eyes, “Of course, love! And what shall we make?” Him, with even more heart-shaped eyes than mine, “Hot dogs, mom!!!!”

Well, the heart eyes were for the hot dogs and not for me!!!! But how could I not indulge him?!?! So, I started kneading my super soft and delicious hot dog buns.

It’s impossible not to know them, if you’ve never eaten them, you’ve surely seen them. Filled with sausages and various sauces, they are the quintessential American street food. They have an elongated shape perfect for accommodating a sausage, whether boiled or grilled.

Preparing them will be very simple, and that subtle sweetness of the dough will win you over at the first bite.

  • Preparation time: 5 Hours
  • Portions: 10
  • Cooking methods: Oven

Ingredients

Below you will find links to some of the ingredients used

  • 2 1/3 cups Manitoba flour
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 7 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 1/2 tsp dry yeast
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • to taste milk

Tools

Below you will find links to some tools used to make the recipe

  • 1 Stand Mixer
  • 1 Metal Scraper
  • 1 Cutting Board
  • 1 Baking Tray
  • 1 Parchment Paper

Steps

  • First, dissolve the yeast in the water with a pinch of sugar.

In the mixer with the hook, put the flours, sugar, and honey, and start it, then add the milk and continue kneading at medium speed. As the dough turns, also add the dissolved yeast and let the dough knead well.

  • When the dough is well wrapped around the hook, start adding the soft butter a little at a time (I divided it into four) and add another piece only when the previous one is well absorbed by the dough.

Once the last piece of butter is incorporated into the hot dog bun dough, add the salt and continue kneading for a couple of minutes.

Now the dough is ready, form a smooth ball and transfer it to a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise for about three hours or until doubled in the turned-off oven.

  • Once the hot dog bun dough has risen, transfer it to a lightly floured work surface and form a log from which to cut 10 pieces of about 70/80 grams.

With the cut pieces, form balls and then logs by flattening the ball and moving it back and forth with the palm of your hand. Place them one by one on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  • Let the hot dog buns rise for an hour covered with plastic wrap, then brush with milk before baking.

After an hour, the buns will have risen, and we can bake them in a preheated oven at a temperature of 350°F for 15 to 20 minutes until they are golden on the surface.

  • Let the buns cool and then fill them with sausages, mayonnaise, ketchup, or mustard, and a load of chips!!!
