We all know how tempting the snacks we often buy at the supermarket are, especially loved by the little ones. It’s true, they are indeed delicious, but sometimes they contain many ingredients that can be harmful if consumed excessively due to the use of low or high-risk additives by industries.
For these reasons, choosing to prepare your own food at home is undoubtedly the best way to minimize, if not completely eliminate, the use of overly processed ingredients and especially the addition of chemical components like preservatives or similar substances.
In this case, I decided to recreate a very famous snack that has been on the market for several years, and I am talking about chocolate chip buns, simple brioche rolls enriched with chocolate chips, from which they derive their name.
For the preparation, I once again used brioche dough, a base that can be used to make many baked recipes like Palermo fried calzones and homemade hamburger buns. Once you have mastered the dough technique, you can make dozens of recipes that you can find here on my blog.
The main ingredients for the dough are flour, water, yeast, sugar, salt, and lard which gives the softness and typicality to this very versatile product. Then, just add chocolate chips and bake to create these fantastic homemade treats!

Ingredients
For about 8 chocolate chip buns
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 oz fresh yeast
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp lard
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 egg yolk
- as needed milk
Tools
- Mixer
- Baking tray
- Parchment paper
- Brush
Steps
To make the soft homemade chocolate chip buns
First, place the ingredients such as flour, water, yeast, lard, and sugar in the mixer
Continue kneading for 4 minutes by operating the mixer and be sure to add salt and chocolate chips at the third minute
After the time has elapsed, transfer the dough to a surface and form a ball, then return it to the bowl, covering with a cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rest for about 2 hours
At this point, open the bowl and transfer the leavened dough back to the work surface, form a log, and cut pieces weighing about 60g each
Once all the pieces are formed, proceed to roll them into balls with circular movements of the palm to obtain spheres
Place all the balls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper to prevent them from sticking to the bottom during the cooking process
Finally, prepare a mixture with one egg yolk and a little milk. Use this liquid to brush over the entire surface of the buns
Finally, bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 20 minutes, making sure to frequently check the degree of cooking. Sometimes 15 minutes may be enough
Tip!
Let it rest for at least 20 minutes before consuming. Also great dipped in milk.
