Sweet streamers. A great way to impress guests with a homemade carnival dessert that is both scenic and undoubtedly exquisite.

Crunchy, fragrant, and irresistible, they can be made at home in no time and very simply, with a quick and easy dough accessible to everyone.

A fun way to get help from the kids, who will have a blast shaping these tasty and original treats.

Carnival is just around the corner, so why not prepare special desserts to best celebrate this period of masked parties and lots of fun?

A festival with very ancient origins but still very much loved throughout Italy today.

Chiacchiere, also known as bugie, crostoli, frappe, or cenci, are undoubtedly the most popular dessert throughout Italy, prepared from north to south and loved by everyone.

I made a very simple dough, a sort of shortcrust pastry, flavored with the grappa typical of my area. But a bit of rum or any aromatic liqueur we like will also work perfectly. Even a splash of white wine or fortified wine doesn’t hurt.

We will put all the ingredients in a bowl, mix them, and then gradually add the flour, continuing to work the dough on the floured work surface until it becomes smooth and homogeneous.

Then we will let it rest for about half an hour wrapped in plastic wrap: in this way, it will be easier to roll out.

To prepare this recipe, you will need cannoli molds on which to wrap the strips. Only in this way can you obtain your streamers! Below you will find the doses and the procedure with tips.

Ingredients for Sweet Streamers

  • 2 egg
  • 1 1/8 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon grappa (or white wine)
  • Half lemon (grated zest)
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch baking soda (or baking powder)
  • as needed vegetable oil (for frying)
  • as needed powdered sugar
  • 1 egg white (for brushing)

Tools

  • Rolling Board
  • Pan
  • Rolling Pin
  • Pastry Wheel
  • Kitchen Scales
  • Paper Towels
  • Skimmer
  • Molds
  • Bowl

Steps for Sweet Streamers

  • The first thing to do is take a bowl and combine the eggs and sugar, sunflower oil, grappa, and grated lemon zest.

Give it a stir then add a pinch of salt.

At this point gradually add the flour and start kneading with your hands.

  • Move to a work surface and continue kneading; you should obtain a smooth and homogeneous dough.

When the dough seems ready, wrap it in plastic wrap and let it rest for about half an hour.

  • Roll out the dough with a rolling pin; it should be very thin. (About 1/8 inch)

  • Cut the dough into many strips, then roll each strip onto a cannoli mold.

With a pastry wheel or a simple pizza cutter, form many strips about 1/5 inch wide and wrap one strip at a time around each cone.

(I recommend wetting the two ends with a little egg white, otherwise they open too much during cooking).

To prevent the pastry from detaching from the mold during frying.

    Sweet Streamers
  • Fry our streamers in hot oil (about 340°F), turning them occasionally and draining them as soon as they are well browned.

“My advice: a few at a time, they are more manageable”.

Place them on a paper towel to remove excess oil.

  • When they are cold, remove the mold.

Finally, decorate our sweet streamers with a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

    And serve!

    Sweet Streamers
  • Enjoy your meal.

Tips

We can also make colorful sweet streamers: after preparing the dough and letting it rest, divide it into several parts and add a little gel food coloring to each, reworking each piece to incorporate the colors and obtain a uniform coloration.

At this point, roll out each piece of dough and proceed as for the uncolored version.

You will see; they will be a hit.
