Ham Melon and Mozzarella Snacks

These Ham Melon and Mozzarella Snacks are perfect for a finger food appetizer or as a light and fresh main course, just prepare them a few hours in advance and keep them in the fridge until serving.

I find ham and melon perfect on their own, but this combination with mozzarella, basil leaves, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil works really well.

They will be perfect for a buffet dinner on the terrace and once again, no stovetop needed.

Ingredients for Ham Melon and Mozzarella Snacks

  • 4 cups melon
  • 5 oz cured ham (or cooked ham or even speck)
  • 7 oz buffalo mozzarella
  • to taste basil
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • to taste black pepper (optional)

Preparation of Ham Melon and Mozzarella Skewers

  • To prepare the melon and mozzarella skewers, first drain the mozzarella from its preservation liquid.

  • Then remove the skin from the melon and cut it first into slices a few inches thick and then into cubes.

  • You can use small wooden or bamboo toothpicks to create single portions as we did, or longer skewers to insert lots of cubes of ham, melon, and mozzarella.

  • Then take the melon cubes, place half a slice of cured ham (or cooked or even speck) nicely folded on top.

  • If using mozzarella balls, add one on top of each slice of ham, otherwise cut the mozzarella about the same size as the melon slice and place it on top of the ham.

  • Finish the ham and melon skewers with a well-washed basil leaf, skewer with the toothpicks, drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil, and if you like, a grind of black pepper.

  • Keep in the refrigerator until serving.

    Of course, you can replace it with cooked ham, speck, or bresaola.

  • What vegetable can I add?

    If you want to make them more tasty and colorful, you can add 2 or 3 arugula leaves folded together between the ham and mozzarella.
