Chocolate Easter bunnies: a sweet tradition

The history of the Easter bunny

The tradition of chocolate Easter bunnies has ancient roots. In many cultures the rabbit was regarded as a symbol of fertility and new life. In Germany it was believed that a hare brought colored eggs to children on Easter Sunday. During the 19th century this tradition spread across Europe and to the United States, where chocolate bunnies began to be mass-produced.

Easter is approaching and don’t know what to prepare to celebrate it? Here are puff pastry bunnies filled with chocolate—super delicious and tasty just for you. I also prepared them in another version; if you want to see it click here (puff pastry and Nutella bunnies).

They take less than half an hour to make, are very easy—just a bunny-shaped cutter and a cream to fill them. They are perfect as a souvenir, or can be served as sweet finger food for guests. Also great with coffee, tea, or for an Easter brunch. Fun and delicious—one leads to another, enjoy them!

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 5.3 oz Nutella® (or a chocolate spread of your choice)
  • 2 tsp milk
  • as needed powdered sugar

Tools

  • Rolling pin Home Rolling Pin, 12 in, Wood, 12 x 1.6 x 1.6 in
  • Parchment paper Cuki Parchment Paper Sheets 13 x 15 in – 25 sheets – 1 pack
  • Brushes Silicone Kitchen Brushes, 2 Pcs Silicone Basting Brushes for Pastry and Spatula, heat resistant, Food Brushes for Butter/Barbecue/Desserts/Bakery/Cold Cuts/Steaks

Steps

  • Unroll the puff pastry, keeping its paper. Spread the chocolate cream over one half of the pastry, leaving a border of about 1 cm (about 0.4 in). Cover the cream with the other half of the pastry. Roll with a rolling pin to seal well so the pastry won’t puff up in the oven.

  • Now cut the dough using rabbit cutters. Place the bunnies on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, brush the shapes with milk. Bake in a preheated oven at 356°F for about 15 minutes or until the pastry is golden. Remove from the oven and let cool, then dust with powdered sugar.

Storage of chocolate Easter bunnies

You can store them for a few days in a cookie tin, but you probably won’t need to—they will all be eaten.
