Microwave popcorn
  • Difficulty: Very easy
  • Cost: Very economical
  • Rest time: 1 Minute
  • Preparation time: 2 Minutes
  • Portions: 2
  • Cooking methods: Microwave
  • Cuisine: American
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients

  • 1.8 oz corn (for popcorn)
  • to taste salt (optional)
  • to taste oil (or melted butter, optional for seasoning)

Tools

  • 1 Bowl Popcorn Maker

Microwave Popcorn Preparation

  • If using a silicone popcorn maker, ensure it is clean and dry. If you don’t have one, you can use a glass bowl with a microwave-safe lid.

  • Once the bowl is raised, it is ready to be used.

  • As you can see, the inside of the bowl has circular markings to fill level with the popcorn corn. I recommend filling up to 1.8 oz, as not all of them will pop. If you need more, it’s better to prepare them in two batches.

  • Fill it with 1.8 oz of corn for popcorn, without exceeding the limit marked on the bowl (if present). If there are no reference marks, consider that 1.8 oz equals about 3 tablespoons.

  • Place the container in the microwave and cook at 800W for about 3 minutes. Listen carefully: when you hear the kernels popping less frequently (about 2-3 seconds between pops), turn off the microwave to avoid burning them.

  • Let them rest in the switched-off microwave for 30 seconds. Then carefully remove the container (it will be hot) and open the lid slowly to avoid scalding steam.

  • Transfer the popcorn to a large bowl. If there are some unpopped kernels, you can put them back in the microwave for another 20 seconds, but don’t overdo it to avoid burning them.

  • Add a pinch of salt or a drizzle of spray oil for a more intense flavor. If you prefer a sweet touch, try with a bit of sugar or cinnamon!

Useful Tips

Do not exceed 3 minutes: if you cook them too long, they will become bitter or burnt.
Beware of hot steam: when opening the lid, do it cautiously to avoid burns.
Customize the seasonings: try with paprika, grated Parmesan, or a splash of melted butter for a stronger taste.

Variations

Cheese Popcorn: Sprinkle with Parmesan or nutritional yeast for a savory flavor.
Sweet Popcorn: Add brown sugar and cinnamon right after cooking.
Spicy Popcorn: Add a pinch of chili powder for an extra kick.

  • Why don’t some kernels pop?

It depends on the moisture content of the corn. If they are too dry, they might not pop well. Try storing the corn in an airtight container to maintain optimal moisture.

  • Are homemade popcorn healthier than packaged ones?

Absolutely yes! Industrial popcorn often contains additives and hydrogenated fats. Making them at home, you can control the ingredients and make them healthier.

Microwave popcorn are a healthy, quick, and economical alternative to packaged products. In just a few minutes and with very few ingredients, you can enjoy a crispy and light snack, perfect for a movie night or a tasty snack. Try them and customize with your favorite seasonings!
