Christmas Blooming Savory Log

The blooming savory log is a simple yet impressive appetizer, perfect for Christmas and New Year’s festive tables.
It’s a roll prepared with slices of sandwich bread, filled, rolled, and decorated with ingredients that can be varied and personalized according to your taste.
My roll is filled with a cheese and sun-dried tomato cream, then decorated and spread with creamy cheese and mayonnaise to give a log effect, all blooming with carved cherry tomatoes and slices of salami.

Making the savory log is really easy and fun, especially decorating the outside. You can get creative with other decorations to make it look more like a real tree log, and it doesn’t require baking. You can even prepare it the day before and keep it in the fridge.

If you like the idea, save the recipe, you will make a great impression as it is really beautiful and impressive, and the slices are very tasty and flavorful.

  • 150 g Cream Cheese
  • as needed Cherry Tomatoes
  • as needed Hungarian Salami
  • as needed Black Olives
  • as needed Basil
  • 15 Sun-Dried Tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon Capers
  • 4 leaves Basil
  • 1 clove Garlic
  • as needed Olive Oil (about 2-3 tablespoons)
  • 100 g Cream Cheese
  • 10 slices Provola (thin)

Tools

  • 1 Blender
  • 1 Plastic Wrap
  • 1 Rolling Pin

Preparation for the Christmas Blooming Savory Log

  • To prepare the roll, start with the filling. Blend the sun-dried tomatoes with the capers, basil, garlic clove, and enough oil to soften them a bit. It should become a slightly coarse cream.

  • Pour the blended tomatoes into a small bowl, then add the cream cheese, mix, and combine well until it forms a uniform pink color.

  • Place the 5 slices of sandwich bread overlapping on a sheet of plastic wrap and flatten them with a rolling pin.
Fill the slices by spreading the sun-dried tomato cream and the slices of provola.

  • Gently roll the slices with the help of the plastic wrap until you form a roll. Close tightly and let it rest for 15 minutes in the freezer.
In the meantime, prepare the cream and the ingredients for the decoration.

    Blooming Savory Log
  • Wash the cherry tomatoes, carve them into wedges, and skewer them onto a toothpick, opening the petals and inserting a half black olive in the center, like forming a flower.
Create other decorations by rolling slices of salami.

  • Take the roll out of the freezer, remove the plastic wrap, and then cut the two ends. Cut another piece diagonally and then place and assemble the log on a long serving plate.

  • Spread the cheese and mayonnaise cream evenly over the log, giving a spatula effect by creating waves with the back of a spoon or, if preferred, lines with the tines of a fork.

  • Complete the blooming savory log by skewering the tomato and salami flowers, also adding basil leaves, some olive pieces, and pink pepper.
The log is ready to be presented on the table!
Store in the fridge until it’s time to slice and serve.

Anna recommends…

You can vary and fill the log with capricciosa salad, salmon slices and cheese, ham, or tuna, your choice according to your taste.
The savory log keeps in the fridge for 2-3 days if well covered and in the freezer for about a month.
