This delicious roll is made with a sheet of mozzarella, which you can now easily find in any supermarket or dairy, a layered filling of various ingredients, and then after rolling the Mozzarella, just let it rest in the refrigerator for a few minutes to set.

At this point, the Stuffed Mozzarella Roll is ready to be enjoyed: slice it into not too thin slices, which will appear as rich, cheerful, and colorful pinwheels. Plate it and enrich your table with taste and imagination.

A true joker to have up your sleeve when you have friends over for dinner and want to prepare something tasty yet fresh and light, ideal to assemble in advance to have everything ready when guests arrive.

Today, among the many possible variations, we will stuff the Mozzarella Sheet with my favorite “filling”: Tuna Sauce, cooked ham, and lettuce, a great classic that always proves successful.

However, this preparation lends itself to many variations: you can fill the mozzarella roll with olive pâté and speck or with cooked ham and grilled vegetables such as zucchini and peppers, or with arugula and prosciutto, with prosciutto and sautéed mushrooms, with an omelet, spreadable cheese, and bresaola… That’s why I say it’s a true joker recipe that can be personalized as desired.

If you are a little skilled in the kitchen and want to try, you can also create the Mozzarella Sheet starting from simple mozzarellas: just put them in a microwave-safe bowl and melt them (it will take a few minutes).

Prepare the Stuffed Mozzarella Roll as an informal family appetizer, for a get-together with friends, or for a light weeknight dinner. It will take you just a few minutes but will give great satisfaction!

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets mozzarella (Mozzarella Sheet)
  • 8 slices cooked ham
  • A few leaves lettuce
  • as needed extra virgin olive oil
  • 10.5 oz tuna in oil
  • 7 oz mayonnaise
  • 0.35 oz capers
  • 4 fillets anchovies

Tools

  • Parchment paper
  • Bowl
  • Fork

Steps

  • Start by preparing the Tuna Sauce. Drain the tuna and place it in a bowl, then crumble it with a fork. Add the mayonnaise, capers, and anchovies. At this point, depending on whether you want a smoother or chunkier sauce, you can decide whether to blend it with an immersion blender or simply mix everything with a fork. Once finished, put it in a container, cover it with cling film in contact, and let it rest in the fridge for a few minutes.

  • Meanwhile, wash the lettuce and dry it with a clean towel. Take a cutting board, cover it with a sheet of parchment paper, and place the unrolled mozzarella sheet on top. Begin composing the filling by making a first layer with cooked ham, then spread a layer of Tuna Sauce over the ham, continue by placing the lettuce leaves on top of the sauce, and finally finish with a last layer of cooked ham.

  • At this point, roll the stuffed mozzarella sheet using the parchment paper to help you, and tighten well as you wrap the filling. Once ready, let the roll rest in the fridge wrapped in parchment paper for about 10 minutes. After the time has passed, remove the parchment paper and cut the Stuffed Mozzarella Roll into slices about 1 inch thick. Plate on a bed of salad or place each slice in a single-serving bowl and drizzle with a little olive oil. Your stuffed mozzarella roll is ready to be enjoyed!

HOW TO MAKE MOZZARELLA SHEET AT HOME

To make the mozzarella sheet at home starting from a common mozzarella, proceed as follows.

Start by placing the mozzarella and its conserving water in a bowl, which should be slightly larger than the mozzarella. Add more water until the mozzarella is completely covered. Place the bowl in the microwave and set it to 900 W for 7 minutes: the mozzarella should melt.

Once the mozzarella has softened, transfer it to a sheet of parchment paper using a spoon. Place another sheet of parchment paper over the melted mozzarella and start rolling it out with a rolling pin. This operation must be done as quickly as possible because mozzarella tends to solidify quickly. Try to obtain a thin rectangle with a thickness of a few millimeters measuring approximately 12 x 8 inches. At this point, your Mozzarella Sheet is ready to be filled.

STORAGE

The Stuffed Mozzarella Roll can be stored in the fridge, in an airtight container, for up to 2 days. Freezing is not recommended.
