Original American CLUB SANDWICH Recipe

The Club Sandwich is the king of multi-layered sandwiches, rich and tasty, typical of American cuisine.

Originating in New York around the 90s by the chef of the Saratoga, the clubhouse of a gambling establishment (hence the initial name of Club House Sandwich), it was an immediate success and soon spread worldwide.

It’s a very easy and quick preparation: just toast some sandwich bread and then fill it with layers of chicken or turkey, lettuce, tomato, fried bacon, and mayonnaise; finally, cut in half or quarters and held together with long toothpicks.

As with any traditional recipe, there are different versions of the CLUB SANDWICH in the original American recipe: 3 types of meat (ham, chicken or turkey, and bacon), lettuce, tomato, all layered between slices of toasted bread.

Today we will prepare a version with only chicken and bacon, without ham but with the addition of boiled eggs, a unique, gourmet, multi-layered, and colorful delight.

Regardless of the ingredients you want to use to make your Club Sandwich, the secret to a perfect result is not to leave gaps in the filling and to follow a certain order in stacking, even if it may seem tedious.

To make the Club Sandwich, I recommend using high-quality sandwich bread, soft, with or without crust. For the filling, depending on your tastes, you can choose chicken or turkey breast, leftovers work great too!

You can add boiled egg, as I did, or from this basic version create numerous other variations. In the fish version with avocado and smoked salmon, or vegetarian with grilled vegetables, sun-dried tomatoes, and cheese, whatever you have available in the fridge or whatever you like best.

The Club Sandwich is perfect as a main course to enjoy during lunch breaks, easy to transport, and ideal to take to the beach or a picnic. Preparing it is as simple as making a sandwich, but what a sandwich: tall, super stuffed, rich, succulent, a gourmet sandwich, but also an excellent idea to recycle leftover chicken or turkey.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bread (sandwich)
  • 10.5 oz chicken (or turkey slices)
  • 2.1 oz bacon (4 slices)
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 leaves lettuce
  • 7 oz tomatoes
  • 3.5 oz mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp butter

Tools

  • Pan

Steps

  • First, prepare the boiled eggs. Put the eggs in a saucepan with cold water, the water should cover the eggs. Bring to a boil, then calculate 9 minutes of cooking. After the time, cool the eggs under running cold water.

To open them, gently tap them on a work surface to crack the shell, remove it, then set them aside until needed.

  • Take the slices of bread, lightly butter them by brushing with melted butter, then quickly toast them in a pan (about 1 minute per side). Remove from the heat and set aside.

In the same pan, roast the bacon slices for about 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy. Set aside and let cool.

  • Proceed to cook the chicken if you’re not using leftover chicken or turkey.

Cook the chicken breasts in the same pan as the bacon, using the melted fat, for about 2 minutes per side. Once ready, let them cool slightly. In the meantime, wash the lettuce and tomatoes and slice them thinly

  • Now that you have all the elements to assemble the Club Sandwich, proceed as follows. Place the slices of bread on a cutting board, spread mayonnaise on one side of each. Place lettuce on half of the bread slices, touching the mayonnaise, followed by tomato, bacon, another slice of lettuce, chicken, finish with the boiled egg, and close with a slice of bread (the side with mayonnaise should be in contact with the egg slices).

  • Spread the top side of the bread with more mayonnaise. Repeat by adding lettuce, chicken, tomatoes, and bacon. Close with the last slice of bread, always with mayonnaise in contact with the ingredients.

Skewer the Club Sandwiches with a toothpick and cut them to obtain two halves of a Club Sandwich. Serve immediately accompanied by salad or chips.
