Crispy Light Tropea Onion Flatbread

Crispy Light Tropea Onion Flatbread, a light and delicious second course where balsamic vinegar enhances the sweet and unique flavor of Tropea onions.

If you want a richer dish, replace the dough I made for the flatbread with puff pastry.

If you prepare smaller flatbreads, you can also serve them as an appetizer.

    Crispy Light Tropea Onion Flatbread
  • Cut the Tropea onion with a knife. I got about 4/5 slices from one onion depending on the size.

  • In a bowl, pour flour, water, and salt.

  • Add the oil and start mixing the dough with a spoon.

  • Continue kneading on a floured surface. Move the mixture into a bowl covered with plastic wrap.

  • On a sheet of parchment paper, place oil and balsamic vinegar.

  • Place the onions on the seasoning.

  • Bake in the oven at 356°F for about ten minutes. You will see that the onion softens but will not be fully cooked yet.

  • While the onions are baking, I took the dough, divided it into four parts, and rolled it out with the help of a rolling pin.

  • I placed the rolled dough over the onions.

  • I closed the edges and then put it in the oven to finish baking for about 20 minutes at 356°F, or until golden.

  • Remove from the oven and flip, serve warm or hot.

FAQ (Questions and Answers)

  • Can I use puff pastry?

Absolutely yes, I chose this type of dough to avoid too much fat.

  • Can I avoid using onions?

Of course, for example, in summer I prepare it with cherry tomatoes.

  • Don’t you use eggs or cheese?

I was looking for a light second course after the holidays, but nothing prevents adding eggs and cheese.

  • Didn’t you use yeast to prepare the flatbread?

No, specifically to achieve a crispy result. However, if you want to obtain a softer dough, I suggest using half a teaspoon of instant yeast.
