Dried figs stuffed with nuts and covered in chocolate are delicious treats prepared in the winter and especially during the Christmas season. They are enjoyed alongside nougats and other holiday treats.
These delicacies are usually prepared in southern Italy, repeating old traditions.
In the old days, my mother used to sun-dry them and then stuff them during the holiday season with toasted nuts and grated citrus zest and enjoyed them during the festivities.
Today I wanted to replicate this recipe but with a touch of extra indulgence by covering them in dark chocolate.
The preparation is very simple: just open the figs and fill them with a mix of almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, and grated mandarin and orange zest, then cover them with a crunchy shell of dark chocolate.
You can personalize the recipe by stuffing them with just walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts, or a combination of whole and chopped nuts.

Steps for Dried Figs Stuffed with Nuts and Covered in Chocolate

Remove from the oven and let them cool.
Meanwhile, split the dried figs in half and grate the citrus zest.
Stuff each fig with an almond, a hazelnut, a piece of walnut, and a bit of citrus zest.
Close and press well with your hands, do the same with all the other figs.
In a saucepan over a bain-marie or in the microwave for a few minutes, melt the dark chocolate. Dip and cover each stuffed fig and place it on a baking tray with parchment paper.
Once completed, let the chocolate dry and set in a cool place for about 30 minutes or for 10 minutes in the refrigerator. When the chocolate coating has cooled, the figs are ready to serve.
