  • 1 jar natural plain yogurt
  • 4 tbsps powdered milk
  • to taste fresh fruit (optional)

Tools

  • 1 Pan
  • 1 Whisk
  • 1 Thermometer kitchen
  • 6 Jars glass yogurt

Homemade Yogurt Preparation

  • Making homemade yogurt is really simple, just follow a few easy rules, and you’ll always have excellent yogurt made with your own hands, free of additives and preservatives, to enjoy at any time of the day.

  • You can make homemade yogurt with the milk you usually use at home. If you’re lactose intolerant or use highly digestible milk, use that to make the yogurt. If you’re vegetarian and use oat or soy milk, use that, but in this case, you must also use soy yogurt; the result will be identical.

  • To prepare homemade yogurt, heat the milk in a pan until it almost reaches a boil. If you want creamy and thick yogurt, add 4 tablespoons of powdered milk, and stir to dissolve it.

Wait for the milk to reach 104°F (40°C) (use a kitchen thermometer), or use your finger; if you feel it just warm, it’s at the right point.

  • Mix now your store-bought yogurt with the warm milk, making sure to stir very well to dissolve it. Then distribute the resulting milk into the jars or containers where you want to store it.

  • Preheat the oven to 122°F (50°C), insert the jars (those that will become homemade yogurt), turn off the oven, and leave the light on. Don’t think about the yogurt for at least 8-10 hours.

  • After the time has passed, you can add to your yogurt coffee beans, chocolate chips, pieces of fruit, honey, or jam. Then cover the jars and place them in the refrigerator for a few hours before enjoying them.

  • The powdered lactic cultures can be purchased at the pharmacy. Each sachet is enough for 1 qt of milk. Just ask for yogurt cultures, not those for when people are sick.

  • Proceed as per the recipe, but instead of adding yogurt, add the sachet of lactic cultures, mix very well, put it in the jars, and then continue as explained above.

  • It’s very important not to stir the homemade yogurt while it’s setting in the oven. You need to wait until it thickens before stirring and adding what you want.

  • The next time you want to make yogurt, if you use sachets, use one sachet for each liter of milk. If you want to use your previously made yogurt, you can, but remember you can only use your yogurt to create more yogurt four times.

This is because the lactic cultures in the yogurt will weaken each time, so the yogurt will still be delicious and tasty, but it won’t have the same creamy consistency as the first yogurt you made.
