How to Cook Potatoes in the Microwave
Here’s how to cook potatoes in the microwave, I’ll give you the most used and simplest methods to do with a normal microwave.
First of all, decide if you want to cook and consume them with the skin then wash and scrub them very well.
If the potatoes are new or small, you can leave them whole; otherwise, cut them in half or into more pieces if they are too large.
Look at the photo so you will understand more or less how big you should cut them.
We removed the skin because unfortunately, I am allergic.
Once washed and cut, put them inside a glass bowl that can go in the microwave, add water, and cover the bowl with plastic wrap.
Cook the potatoes in the microwave at maximum power (in my case 750w) for 6/8 minutes.
It would be great to open the microwave halfway through cooking and shake the bowl so the top potatoes go underneath.
Once the cooking time has passed, the plastic wrap should stick to the potatoes, creating a vacuum.
If this doesn’t happen, extend the cooking for another 2 minutes, then let them rest at room temperature for at least 5 minutes before removing the plastic wrap.
If you want to cook whole potatoes to then, for example, hollow out and stuff them, you don’t need the bowl or the plastic wrap.
So wash the potatoes very well, leaving the skin on.
With a fork, poke each potato in several places (this prevents them from exploding during cooking).
Now place the potatoes on the microwave turntable and brush them with a little oil.
Set the microwave function to 750w and cook the potatoes for 4 minutes, open the door and turn the potatoes.
Cook the potatoes for another 4 or 5 minutes and then do the toothpick test, if it penetrates easily, the potatoes are ready.
Remove them from the microwave, cut them in half, scoop out the flesh with a teaspoon, and stuff them as you like.
The potatoes cooked in the microwave are perfect for many preparations, especially for making gnocchi (because they do not absorb water).
Since they do not absorb water, they will be perfect for making mashed potatoes
Practical Tips
Do not salt the potatoes before cooking them in the microwave because this type of cooking accentuates all flavors, and they would become too salty.
However, you can season them with the aromatic herbs you like best and even a clove of garlic to add more flavor.
If you need to use them to make a potato omelet or a potato pie or any dish where they will be cooked again, cook them for 3 minutes less before using them.
If you need to use them to make mashed potatoes or other dishes where the potatoes need to be mashed, do it as soon as they’ve rested with the plastic wrap while they’re still warm to pass through the potato masher.
