Today I saw some quick savory Christmas candles on Instagram and there was nothing I could do; I rushed to the kitchen to try this fun and I must say tasty idea, thinking about the upcoming end-of-year holidays.
These savory Christmas candles are very very easy, and we can also prepare them in advance and keep them covered with cling film until it’s time to eat.
I preferred to toast the circles of sandwich bread in the oven for a few minutes so they remain crispy longer and don’t get soggy with the savory creams that are added later.
So after toasting the circles in the oven grill, about the size of a shot glass, I put a tiny bit of mayonnaise (but if you like, add mustard), then a slice of salami (for me, Emilian-Bolognese strolghino), then a stick of Emmental (but sweet or spicy provolone is also fine depending on personal taste), and finally a pickled onion!!!!!!
Let’s not overdo with the sauce for the super quick savory Christmas candle appetizer because otherwise, we might end up making a mess while eating this simple and tasty finger food!
I called it quick because after 3 minutes at 428°F (220°C) in the oven, the bread is nicely golden, so toasted that I slice the salami and cheese, and for the onions, I just need to open a jar, so…. you can do it!

FOR PREPARING THE QUICK CHRISTMAS CANDLE savory appetizer
I cut circles from the slices of sandwich bread sandwiches or toast (plain bread without crust would be better, but I had this at home and I don’t like to waste food unnecessarily) of a few inches in diameter.
I blend the bread leftovers in the mixer and then season with herbs and spices and a grating of lemon zest, I dress the pasta with good extra virgin olive oil!
After toasting the circles in the oven for a few minutes, I add a drop of mayonnaise then a slice of salami.
I cut some columns of Emmental and put a little pickled onions in a bowl to facilitate the assembly of the appetizing Christmas candles!
I skewer the onion, cheese stick, and stick the toothpick into the salami strolghino penetrating also into the circle of golden bread in the home oven grill.
HERE YOU’RE DONE PREPARING THE QUICK CHRISTMAS CANDLES savory appetizer which, if not used immediately, can be covered with plastic wrap in the fridge until the right moment!
Enjoy your meal!
