APPETIZERS SPIRAL SANDWICHES WITH MORTADELLA

APPETIZERS SPIRAL SANDWICHES WITH MORTADELLA

If you’re looking for a cold appetizer without cooking that’s easy and quick to prepare, the SPIRAL SANDWICHES are just what you need.

Ideal for accompanying an aperitif as an alternative to canapés and classic sandwiches, to be served at a buffet or as a snack during the day, the spiral sandwiches are a very simple cold appetizer without cooking, ready in a few minutes that you can also assemble in advance.

Good all year round but especially during summer when you don’t feel like cooking too much, they can also solve a quick last-minute lunch.

There are endless possibilities for stuffing these tasty Spiral Sandwiches made with White Bread; today I decided to use Bologna Mortadella IGP as the filling, Spreadable Cheese and Pistachio Crumbs for decoration, but they can be personalized in a thousand different ways using any type of cold cuts and sauce or replacing it with spreadable cheese and aromatic herbs.

You can prepare the spiral sandwiches in advance and leave them in the fridge until it’s time to serve them.

Beautiful to present due to their characteristic spiral shape, reminiscent of Sushi rolls, they are both tasty and delicate. These fun spirals become the right choice even when you have unexpected guests and want to serve them something good and tasty.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices sandwich bread (rectangular)
  • 2.8 oz spreadable cheese
  • 5.3 oz Bologna mortadella
  • as needed chopped pistachios (for decoration)

Tools

  • Rolling pin

Steps

  • Take the two slices of sandwich bread and slightly overlap them on the longer side on a cutting board or work surface. Roll them out with a rolling pin so they become thin and stick together. Spread a generous layer of spreadable cheese, reserving a little for decoration. Evenly distribute the slices of Mortadella over the cheese layer.

  • Starting from one of the long sides of the rectangle, roll the sandwich spiral on itself to form a roll, then wrap it with plastic wrap. Let it rest in the fridge for about 10 minutes. Then remove the plastic wrap, take the remaining spreadable cheese and spread it over the surface of the roll. Sprinkle the chopped pistachios on top and press lightly to adhere. Finally, cut the roll into slices about 3/4 inch thick. Serve the spirals arranged on a serving platter or keep in the fridge until ready to serve.

NOTES

SANDWICH BREAD For this recipe I used crustless white sandwich bread because it’s softer and less dry than regular toast bread. However, if you can’t find it, you can substitute it with the latter by cutting off the outer edge from all four sides. To prevent it from becoming too dry when you store it in the fridge for resting, wrap it in a slightly damp paper towel before sealing it in plastic wrap.

FILLING These spiral sandwiches lend themselves to infinite variations. Use your preferred cold cuts and pair them with different sauces. Some examples: Cooked Ham and tartar sauce, Salmon and spreadable cheese, Roasted Turkey and tuna sauce, Prosciutto and Mayonnaise, Milano Salami and Olive Pâté. To make it richer, you can also flavor the spreadable cheese with aromatic herbs.

STORAGE

You can prepare the Spiral Sandwiches in advance and keep them in the fridge until ready to serve. They keep for up to 2 days. This preparation is not suitable for freezing.
