SALAMI AND OLIVE PATE SANDWICH SWIRLS
If you want an easy and quick to prepare cold appetizer without cooking, the SANDWICH SWIRLS are what you need.
Ideal as an aperitif instead of the classic sandwiches or canapés, to serve in a buffet or as a snack during the day, the sandwich swirls are a simple cold appetizer without cooking, ready in a few minutes that you can also assemble in advance.
Good all year round but especially when you don’t feel like cooking, they can also solve a quick last-minute lunch.
There are endless possibilities to fill these tasty Sandwich Swirls of white bread. Today I decided to use Salami Milano, Taggiasca Olive Pate as the filling, and chopped hazelnuts for decoration, but they can be personalized in a thousand different ways using any cold cut and accompanying sauce, or substituting it with spreadable cheese and herbs.
As an alternative, I suggest the SANDWICH SWIRL with TUNA SAUCE and toasted pine nuts for decoration, or the SANDWICH SWIRL with MORTADELLA and Spreadable Cheese.
You can also prepare the sandwich swirls in advance and leave them in the fridge until it’s time to serve them.
Beautiful to present for their characteristic spiral shape that vaguely resembles Sushi rolls, they are at the same time tasty but delicate. These funny swirls become the right choice even when you have unexpected guests and want to serve them something good and tasty.
Try them and let me know if you liked them by leaving a comment in the box at the bottom of the recipe.

Ingredients
- 2 slices sandwich bread (rectangular)
- 3.5 oz Salami Milano (or Hungarian)
- 3 oz olive pate
- chopped hazelnuts (for decoration)
Tools
- Rolling pin
Steps
Take the two slices of sandwich bread and overlap them slightly on the long side on a cutting board or work surface. Roll them out with a rolling pin so that they thin and stick together. Spread a generous layer of olive pate and keep a little aside for decoration. Evenly distribute the slices of salami over the layer of pate.
Starting from one of the two long sides of the rectangle, roll the sandwich swirl on itself forming a roll, then wrap it with plastic wrap. Let it rest in the fridge for about 10 minutes. Then remove the wrap, take the remaining pate, and spread it on the surface of the roll. Spread the chopped hazelnuts on top and press lightly to make them stick. Finally, cut the roll into slices about 0.8 inches thick. Serve the swirls arranged on a serving plate or leave them in the fridge until it’s time to serve them.
NOTES
SANDWICH BREAD For this recipe, I used crustless white sandwich bread because it’s softer and less dry than regular toast bread. However, if you can’t find it, you can substitute it with the latter by cutting off the outer edge on all four sides. To prevent it from becoming too dry when storing it in the fridge for resting, wrap it in a slightly damp paper towel with water before sealing it in plastic wrap.
FILLING These sandwich swirls lend themselves to infinite variations. Use the cold cuts you prefer and pair them with different sauces. A few examples: Cooked Ham and tartar sauce, Salmon and cream cheese, Roast Turkey, and tuna sauce, Prosciutto and Mayonnaise. To make it richer, you can also flavor the cream cheese with herbs.
STORAGE
The Sandwich Swirls can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
