YOGURT AND OAT FLAKES (CHOCOLATE OVERNIGHT OATS) We’ve learned by now, breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it gives us the right boost and the strength we need to best tackle the various tasks ahead.
Today I present to you this recipe for a Breakfast of Oat Flakes, Milk, and Greek Yogurt, a kind of Porridge that is prepared in no time, full of energy and taste, the CHOCOLATE OVERNIGHT OATS with Greek Yogurt and Chocolate. A nice cup of this Anglo-Saxon dessert and we’ll be ready to face the challenges of the day, whether in the office, at school, at home for housework, or, for those who can, to be tourists in villages and cities.
For those who don’t know, Overnight Porridge is a variant of the classic Anglo-Saxon recipe that requires no cooking, perfect for those with little time or who don’t want to cook. It’s prepared in advance, usually the night before, left in the fridge overnight, and by morning it’s ready to enjoy with your favorite topping.
An extremely easy recipe: oat flakes are mixed together with milk or water, Greek yogurt, flavored as desired with vanilla and sweetened with honey. Once mixed, the mixture doesn’t need cooking, it just goes into the fridge to rest for at least 4 hours, better if overnight.
You can also watch the video within the recipe to follow each step, even though I assure you it’s really easy, and I’m sure you won’t need it.
Once ready, you’ll only have to choose whether to layer it or not with your favorite yogurt, spreads, and garnish it with your favorite topping because there are endless delicious possibilities.
In today’s CHOCOLATE OVERNIGHT OATS recipe, I created a first layer with Porridge, a second layer with Greek yogurt and Unsweetened Cocoa, and I simply finished by sprinkling with Cocoa and adding some chocolate chips because often the simplest things are the most delicious.
You’ll see how this simple breakfast will satisfy you without weighing you down too much, keeping you full until lunch without that annoying hunger pang.
And if during the day you get a craving or even after dinner you want to treat yourself to a dessert, this bowl of Chocolate OVERNIGHT OATS with yogurt and chocolate will be perfect.
What are you waiting for? Let’s start preparing it together!

Ingredients
- 2/3 cup oat flakes
- 100 water (or plant-based drink or cow's milk)
- 1 tsp honey (or maple syrup)
- 1/2 cup 0% fat Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup 0% fat Greek yogurt
- 1 tsp sweetener (or sugar)
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- unsweetened cocoa powder
- chocolate chips
Tools
- Bowl
- 2 Cups
Steps
In a bowl, mix together oat flakes, honey, yogurt, and almond milk (or cow’s milk or another plant-based drink) until combined. Transfer the mixture into a single-serving cup and place in the fridge for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
After resting and before consuming, finish the preparation. In a bowl, mix Greek yogurt with 1 tablespoon of sugar (I use sweetener) and unsweetened cocoa until perfectly blended. Pour over the porridge and level with the back of a spoon.
Sprinkle with more cocoa and some chocolate chips. If you prefer an even more indulgent version, melt 40 g of milk chocolate with ½ teaspoon of coconut oil (or sunflower seed oil) in the microwave and pour over the Cocoa Yogurt. Place in the fridge to set for a couple of minutes. Enjoy your breakfast!
NOTES
WATER To make an even creamier porridge, you can replace the water with an equal amount of cow’s milk or plant-based drink (soy, almond, oat, rice).
HONEY You can replace honey with maple syrup or sweetener (for a light version) or even omit it.
VANILLA It’s incredible how a pinch of this essence can enhance the taste of your Porridge, but if you don’t like this spice, you can omit it.
OVERNIGHT REST: Let the oats rest in the fridge for at least 2-3 hours, preferably overnight. This allows the flavors to blend and the oats to soften to achieve the perfect consistency.
YOGURT: For this recipe, both for the Porridge preparation and the second layer, I used 0% Greek Yogurt. Compared to regular yogurt, it’s better because it is thicker and less watery.
STORAGE
Chocolate Overnight Oats with Yogurt can (and should) be prepared the night before for the following day. Once ready, it can be stored in the fridge, closed in a container, for up to 2 days.
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
What does overnight porridge mean?
Compared to the preparation of the classic oat porridge, which is cooked in a pot with milk, this is made without cooking. It must be made in advance because the base mixture needs to rest overnight in the fridge (overnight in English means “for a night”).
Why eat porridge in the morning?
Porridge, a preparation based on cereals, typically oats, slowly cooked in water or milk, is a food rich in fiber, protein, and complex carbohydrates, which release energy gradually throughout the morning.
How can I get the right consistency of Oat Flakes?
Getting the perfect consistency of oats is all about the oats-to-liquid ratio. Generally, a 1:2 ratio works well. If the oats are too thick, add a bit more liquid, and if too thin, slightly reduce the amount of milk/water next time.
How can I balance the sweetness when adding fruit and topping to Oat Flakes?
Overnight Oats might be too sweet with some pairings (for example, with hazelnut or pistachio cream). Consider this when deciding how to layer it and maybe taste a spoonful before adding extra sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.
Can I heat my Overnight Oats, or should it be eaten cold?
Overnight Oats are traditionally eaten cold or at room temperature, but if you prefer it warm, you can heat it for a few seconds in the microwave.
