Orange Shortcrust Pastry Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar (for a slightly sweeter pastry, add another 2 tbsp of sugar)
  • 1/2 cup butter (chilled, cut into pieces)
  • 1 orange (untreated, juice and grated zest)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 pinch salt

Orange Shortcrust Pastry Tools

  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Fork
  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 1 Plastic Wrap

Orange Shortcrust Pastry Steps

  • In a large bowl, place the flour, preferably sifted, add the cold butter in cubes and start crumbling it with your fingers until you get a sandy mixture.

  • Once the mixture is sandy and well mixed, add a pinch of salt, sugar, and eggs, now mix well.

  • Add the grated orange zest and juice, work the ingredients until you get a homogeneous and compact dough. Avoid overworking the dough to prevent the butter from overheating, just do it long enough.

  • Wrap the obtained dough in plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This step will allow the butter to solidify again, making the subsequent processing easier.

After the resting time, take the dough out of the refrigerator and let it rest at room temperature for a few minutes. Lightly flour the work surface and roll out the dough with a rolling pin to the desired thickness. Now create whatever you want, the orange shortcrust sweets will be fragrant and delicious, ready to be enjoyed at any time of the day. Enjoy your treat!

Storage and Tips for Orange Shortcrust

The orange shortcrust pastry can also be frozen like all shortcrusts, lasting a few months while maintaining its quality. The best way to freeze all shortcrusts is to form a disk, which will make it easier to roll out the dough later.
Wrap the dough disk well in plastic wrap or parchment paper and seal the dough well in a suitable freezing bag. This will prevent air from coming into contact with it, thus preventing freezer burn.
When ready to use the dough, transfer it from the freezer to the refrigerator and let it thaw for several hours or overnight. Once thawed, you can proceed to roll out the dough and use it as desired to make your favorite sweets.
Freezing shortcrust pastry is a great way to prepare it in advance and always have a ready-to-bake option when needed. The important thing is to ensure it is stored properly to guarantee its freshness and quality when used later.
