Preparation of Pumpkin Grapefruit

Dessert for Halloween

  • Buy whole and nicely round grapefruits without dents, wash them, and dry them well. Cut the top of the grapefruit about three-quarters of the way. Be careful with this operation; use a good knife. You need to be precise because this part will serve as a lid. Once the fruit is cut, you need to empty it of all the pulp, using a teaspoon.

  • Remember that the removed pulp shouldn’t be wasted; it can also be used for a grapefruit cake. Once the grapefruit is hollowed out, with a pointed knife, try to create a pattern all around the circumference of the fruit. Now you’ll need to make eyes, a nose, and a mouth; if it seems difficult and to avoid messing up the proportions, you can draw them with a kitchen marker before carving and then follow the outlined contours with the knife.

  • After finishing carving all the grapefruits, run lemon juice over the peel and especially over the carving. Dry them well and put them in the fridge until you prepare the cream. The grapefruits can be prepared the night before, left in the fridge overnight, and filled the next day to be served.

  • Now prepare the dark chocolate ganache, here you can find how to do it. Once cooled, it is ready to be transferred into the pumpkin grapefruits; if you prefer, you can also add nuts and crumbled cookies. Cover with the piece you cut at the beginning; I used a cinnamon stick and a mint leaf for the stem. Let me know how it went; I’m sure your guests will be blown away, but not from fright! 😉

How to Store or Vary the Recipe

The grapefruits can be stored in the fridge, filled an hour before serving, and left at room temperature.

Do not keep them in the fridge with the chocolate cream because the ganache loses its creaminess.

If you like to vary the filling, you can use white chocolate cream for an excellent result.

The pumpkin grapefruit will also be perfect as a cup for a good fresh fruit salad.
