Here I am! Finally, I come with a recipe dedicated to Christmas: the Christmas salmon canapés shaped like Christmas trees! How wonderful! My first Christmas recipe! 😀
I propose three different ideas to decorate your Christmas salmon canapés, which, I assure you, will make a great impression among the appetizers for Christmas Day or Christmas Eve.
The ingredients are the same for all three versions but with different amounts of salmon to suit everyone’s tastes: the ‘all salmon’ version is perfect for those who love smoked salmon and its intense flavor, the version with garlands is my favorite, in my opinion, in this canapé the amount of salmon is just right, and finally, in the version with Christmas balls, the amount of salmon is minimal, therefore more suitable for those who prefer the salmon flavor to be less overpowering.
On Christmas Day, of course, I won’t stop at preparing just three, but… how about three each? Considering there will be twelve of us at the table… oh yes, I really need to plan ahead and start stocking up on salmon and sandwich bread! 😊
Preparing these salmon canapés is really very simple. You just need a little patience, especially for the two more decorative versions. If you’re in a hurry or lack patience (it can happen, I know well!), you can just stick to making the ‘all salmon’ ones, which are undoubtedly the simplest and least demanding.
But if you want to showcase your skills and want to hear ‘how beautiful!’ just like my children exclaimed when I brought them to the table… well, then you really have to try preparing all three types, and it doesn’t matter if they don’t come out perfect because I assure you they will still make a beautiful impression!
Well, then get the ingredients and a Christmas tree-shaped cookie cutter and we can start!

Cut the canapé using the tree-shaped cutter.
Cut small salmon circles using a very small round cutter, if you have one, or using scissors, like I did!
Place the salmon ‘Christmas balls’ on the tree according to your imagination.
Finish each canapé, of any type, by decorating with poppy seeds and pink (or green) peppercorns as desired.
I can only wish you good fun, bon appétit, and Merry Christmas!
Salt-Free Tips
Dedicated to those following a low-sodium diet:
Smoked salmon is salty, as we know. Spreadable cheese is salty, unless homemade without salt. Pink and green peppercorns are brined, as we know. Given these three premises regarding the main ingredients (and I deliberately omit comments on sandwich bread), what I suggest is: rinse the peppercorns and soak them in water for a while, make homemade spreadable cheese (either with homemade kefir or natural yogurt), make homemade sandwich bread (like this recipe), but for salmon, I have no suggestions except to try to limit its intake and choose to decorate your salmon canapés in the version with Christmas balls, where the amount of salmon is minimal 🙂
If you are interested in reducing or eliminating salt, always remember to:
▫ Reduce salt gradually, the palate must get used to it slowly and should not notice the progressive reduction.
▫ Use spices. Chili, pepper, curry, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, cumin…
▫ Use herbs. Basil, parsley, oregano, thyme, sage, marjoram, rosemary, mint…
▫ Use seeds. Sesame, pine nuts, almonds, walnuts…
▫ Use spicy vegetables or fruits. Garlic, onion, lemon, orange…
▫ Use my salt-free vegetable granules and gomasio.
▫ Opt for fresh foods.
▫ Avoid cooking in water, prefer methods that do not disperse flavors (grill, foil, steam, microwave)
▫ Avoid bringing the salt shaker to the table!
▫ Occasionally indulge in a treat. It’s good for morale and helps to persevere.
If you do not want or cannot give up salt:
▫ You can still try my recipes by salting according to your habits.
