Yes, this fake fruit cake is a fantastic idea! But I’ll tell you right away, it’s not my idea: it’s one of those ideas that you like at first sight and immediately want to copy. 😉
I don’t know who was the first to spread the photo that I saw circulating online in the past few days, but as soon as I saw it, I thought, “Yes! I’ll make it tomorrow!”
It so happened that we had just invited two dear friends to dinner, and this idea arrived on just the right day, allowing me to present the end-of-meal fruit in an alternative way that everyone enjoyed, and everyone wanted seconds, so I rushed here to write the recipe!

Then, if you need more ideas to end the meal with something fresh and light, here are more suggestions! 👇
- Difficulty: Very Easy
- Cost: Economical
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Portions: 8
- Cooking methods: No Cooking
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: Summer
Ingredients
- 1 slice watermelon
- Half peach
- Half apple
- 2 slices banana
- white grapes
- goji berries
- shredded coconut (desiccated)
- hazelnut granules (optional)
Tools
- Knife with long blade
Steps
Here’s how I did it:
I cut a whole slice from the center of the watermelon and then cut it into eight wedges, just like you would with a cake.
You can achieve the same result by cutting a slice of watermelon into wedges. Decide which method works best for you.
I peeled the apple, washed the peach and the grapes.
I sliced half an apple and half a peach, and cut the grapes in half.
I arranged the fruit on the watermelon slices.
I cut two slices from a banana and divided them into four parts. In my first version of this fake fruit cake (the one I served to our friends Mara and Sandro, and which I didn’t photograph), I used melon. Today the melon was gone, so I decided to try with banana. The result was just as great, so I conclude… you can use any fruit you like!
Garnish with a sprinkle of shredded coconut, which I find essential for the aesthetic success of this dish.
Not essential but delightful, a sprinkle of hazelnut granules. I also added some Goji berries I had at home which added a splash of color, but I confess I would have liked blueberries even more. Next time!
To me, this fake fruit cake seems like a really great idea! Plus, it lends itself to many variations because it’s certainly great with any type of fruit.
What do you think? Do you want to copy the idea? 😉
