Heart-Shaped Tart with Walnut and Hazelnut Crumble

I didn’t know what to call this heart-shaped tart. 😀

I thought of calling it strawberry jam tart, because that’s what it actually is. 🙂

Then I wanted to call it walnut and hazelnut crumble tart, but it seemed misleading not to mention the jam.

Then I realized that tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. Even though, to be honest, when I made this tart I wasn’t thinking of Valentine’s Day at all!

I really like decorating tarts with hearts or flowers or stars, or by using cookie cutters. To make my son happy when he was younger, I decorated them multiple times with airplane and rocket-shaped cookies (and how happy he was!!! 🥰).

It’s a simple way to cheer up children. And my kids always welcome these simple decorations with an “ohhh, what a beautiful tart!”. So… why not do it?

This heart-shaped tart is a classic tart, made with my classic shortcrust pastry. I filled it with strawberry jam and decorated it with walnut and hazelnut crumble, an addition that is not just a simple decoration but gives that extra flavor, which goes well with the strawberry jam and adds a crunchy note that we really like.

And I confess that the invention is not mine. I copied this idea from a similar tart seen (and eaten!) at a buffet at my children’s sports competition. As they say: always said that playing sports is useful! 😀
The mom who invented this tart can feel satisfied because many of us admired… and copied it! 🤩

  • Portions: 8
  • Cooking methods: Oven
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons, Valentine's Day

Ingredients

  • 1 block shortcrust pastry
  • 1 cup strawberry jam
  • walnut and hazelnut crumble (chopped with a knife)

Tools

  • Tart Pan
  • Knife
  • Cookie Cutter

Steps

  • The procedure is very simple.

Prepare the shortcrust pastry as described in the basic recipe.
Roll out two-thirds of the pastry and place it in a 9.5-inch tart pan lined with parchment paper.
    Spread the jam.
Roll out the remaining pastry and cut out hearts with a cookie cutter. I used two, of different sizes.
Arrange the pastry hearts on the jam in the way you like best.

  • Bake the tart in the oven at 350°F for 15 minutes.
Remove from the oven and decorate with the desired amount of walnut and hazelnut crumble.
    Let the tart cool.

    Finally, enjoy your heart-shaped tart!

With the whole family. Or with your sweetheart.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you!
