Today I baked some simple donuts, perfect for a snack or breakfast. They have an ingredient that might seem unusual, the syrup from canned peaches, but it worked great. 😉
We really liked these donuts, my kids ate them all up for snack time!
That’s how these peach-scented donuts were born:
Grandma Vanda had given us a jar of handmade canned peaches from last summer. My daughter and I enjoyed them as a dessert after lunch, then with the empty jar in hand, I wondered what to do with the remaining sweet syrup. Flavia drank some, and I decided to use the rest to make these on-the-fly donuts for snack time.
Sometimes it takes very little to come up with a good, healthy snack for our children!
Of course, instead of homemade canned peach syrup (which might not always be available), you can use canned peach syrup, or even regular peach juice: I had already tried making a cake with fruit juice instead of milk – it was during birthday party times with lots of open juice bottles! – and the result was excellent. 😋

- Difficulty: Easy
- Cost: Inexpensive
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Portions: 6-8
- Cooking methods: Oven
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All seasons
Ingredients
- 1 3/4 cups self-rising flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 2/3 cup canned peach syrup (or peach juice)
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil (corn or sunflower)
Tools
- Molds silicone
Steps
Blend the egg with sugar until it becomes frothy.
Add the peach juice and oil.
To this wet component, add the flour, sifting it while mixing it into the batter.Pour the batter into muffin or donut molds (mine are silicone) or paper cases, making sure to fill them only halfway.
Bake and cook for 15 minutes at 350°F, or until golden.
These are simple donuts, perfect for a snack accompanied by a cup of tea, peach-flavored of course!
But nothing stops us from making them for breakfast, they’re delicious dipped in milk! 😉
My kids absolutely loved these donuts, some spread them with Nutella, little sweet tooths!, and decorated them with colored sprinkles, but… they ate them all before I could photograph them!
Enjoy your snack or breakfast everyone 😀
Substitutions and Variations:
I have repeated this recipe several times and on various occasions I made small changes that didn’t compromise the final result. These simple but always good peach-scented donuts always turn out well! Here are the variations I’ve tried so far:
– instead of self-rising flour I used: plain flour + 1 teaspoon of baking powder
– or on another occasion: 1 1/4 cups plain flour + 1/3 cup potato starch + 1 teaspoon of baking powder
– I tried using less oil: 3 tablespoons (instead of 1/4 cup) using cold-pressed vegetable oil
– and instead of granulated sugar I used brown sugar.Update: as always when I re-photograph a recipe, I leave here the previous photos, which I can rightly label as ‘old’. It’s pure sentimentality I know, but I have a fond memory of my children (who are no longer children) while they were happily eating these very donuts here, which turned out blurry in the photos, but they liked them so much! 😍💛
