Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup butter
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 egg (whole)
- to taste flavorings
- 1 pinch salt
- to taste unsweetened cocoa powder
Tools
- 1 Baking tray
- Cookie cutters
Steps
1. Prepare the dough
Pour the flour into a large bowl or onto a work surface, add the cold butter in pieces and work quickly with your fingertips until you get a crumbly mixture.
Mix in the powdered sugar, pinch of salt, egg, and vanilla extract. Knead quickly until you form a smooth and compact dough.
Wrap it in plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
2. Shape the cookies
After resting time, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about a quarter inch.
With Halloween-themed cutters (pumpkins, ghosts, bats, skulls…) cut out the cookies and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
3. Baking
Bake in a preheated static or fan oven at 320°F for about 12-14 minutes, until the edges start to lightly brown.
Let them cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
You can decorate your spooky cookies if you want!
Prepare the icing by mixing the egg white with the powdered sugar until you get a thick and smooth consistency.
Divide it into small bowls and add food coloring to create different colors. Transfer each color into a piping bag and have fun decorating the cookies with white ghosts, orange pumpkins, and black bats.
Add sprinkles and tasty details as desired.
If you want an even more “scary” effect, add a pinch of unsweetened cocoa to half of the dough to create two-tone cookies… perfect for scaring with sweetness!
