Filled Lies Baked in the Oven

Lies are among the most well-known and prepared desserts during the Carnival period. Each region has its recipe and characteristic ingredients: the term Lies is typical of Piedmont, my birthplace, but in other regions, they are called by very different names. The classic version is certainly the fried one, but the version filled with jam or chocolate is also very popular. That’s why we prepared these Filled Lies Baked in the Oven, finger-licking good.
But pay attention to this recipe, it is very different from the usual ones: it is without eggs, without yeast, without sugar, and without resting time. Very fast!

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Cheap
  • Preparation time: 30 Minutes
  • Portions: about 40 filled lies
  • Cooking methods: Oven
  • Cuisine: Italian

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups milk (lukewarm)
  • 3/8 cup butter
  • as needed jam ((flavor of your choice))
  • 2 pinches fine salt
  • as needed powdered sugar

Preparation

  • On a pastry board, place the flour in a mound, add the butter inside and gradually the slightly warmed milk.

  • Knead well for at least 10 minutes, the consistency should be quite compact and hard, like bread dough.

    Form a dough ball.

  • Cut the dough ball into slices about 3/4 inch wide and roll them out with a rolling pin.

The sheets should be quite thin, so you’ll have more crumbly lies.

  • Place the jam (about a teaspoon per lie) on the sheet, making little piles about 3/4 inch apart.

Then fold the sheet to cover the jam, press well with your fingers to seal the edges, cut with a pastry wheel, and finish with the prongs of a fork to prevent the jam from escaping.

Leave a bit more edge around, so the lies won’t risk opening.

Bake in the oven at 375°F for about 15 minutes, checking from time to time, they should be golden on the surface.

    Sprinkle with powdered sugar
