Hugo Spritz

I encountered it at a friend’s birthday party and never let it go! Hugo Spritz is one of my best cocktails, I find it fresh, reminiscent of summer, with a unique taste. I liked it right away, and I think you will too! This cocktail originated in South Tyrol, allegedly thanks to Roland Gruber, a bartender who proposed it as an alternative aperitif to the Spritz. Originally, lemon balm syrup was used instead of elderflower syrup, but it’s much harder to find.

Here are two refreshing ideas for you:

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Economical
  • Preparation time: 10 Minutes

  • Cuisine: Regional Italian
  • Region: Trentino-Alto Adige

Ingredients

  • 6.8 oz prosecco
  • 3.4 oz sparkling water (or soda)
  • 4 tbsps elderflower syrup
  • to taste mint (fresh leaves)
  • to taste lemon (sliced)

Steps

  • With these amounts, you will get two glasses of Hugo Spritz. Start by placing some ice cubes in each glass. If you want a more intense mint flavor, put the mint leaves in the glass first and gently muddle them to release their fragrance and flavor.

  • Pour two tablespoons of elderflower syrup into each glass. Of course, the amount depends on your preferred intensity and the type of syrup you use, which may be more or less strong.

  • Now pour the prosecco and sparkling water (or soda) into the two glasses; both beverages must be chilled from the fridge. I used 2 parts prosecco and 1 part sparkling water, but if you want it lighter, you can use equal parts wine and water.

  • Finish with mint leaves and lemon slices; you can also squeeze a bit of juice into the glass. Stir everything to mix the ingredients well. If you want a more intense mint flavor, put the mint leaves in the glass first and gently muddle them to release their fragrance and flavor.

  • Absolutely delicious!
