Two-Tone Skull Cookies (Halloween)

And here we are again in Halloween mode! Since I don’t love very dark atmospheres, I wanted to make these Two-Tone Skull Cookies (Halloween), which are more funny than scary. Try them out too, they’re made from simple colored shortcrust pastry!

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Economical
  • Rest time: 1 Hour 30 Minutes
  • Preparation time: 45 Minutes
  • Portions: About 25 cookies
  • Cooking methods: Oven
  • Cuisine: Italian

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg (whole)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 7 tbsp butter
  • 1 food coloring (blue – 5 ml vial)
  • 1 tsp food coloring (liquid red)

Tools

  • Cookie Cutter

Preparation

  • Place the flour in a mound on a work surface, make a well in the center, add the eggs, sugar, cold butter cut into pieces, and start kneading without overworking the ingredients until the dough is smooth and no longer sticky. Place in the fridge for about half an hour

  • Now divide the dough into two parts: one of 200 g and one of 300 g. Place the 200 g of shortcrust pastry between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it out with a rolling pin until it is about 1/8 inch thick. Using a cookie cutter (I used a little mushroom one, which, if well decorated, looks like a skull), create a strip by joining one skull to another, up to about 8 inches. Place in the freezer for about 30 minutes.

  • Proceed to color the 300 g shortcrust pastry with a 5 ml blue food coloring vial and a teaspoon of red coloring. Add a little flour and knead well until you get a uniform color.

  • After the time has passed, take the strip of skulls out of the freezer, roll out the colored dough with a rolling pin and wrap it around the chilled dough, making it adhere well. Place back in the freezer for about half an hour

  • Remove the shortcrust pastry roll from the freezer and cut cookies about 1/4 inch thick. You will get about 25 cookies

  • Place a sheet of parchment paper on the baking tray, arrange the cookies, and bake at 350°F for 10/12 minutes. Once baked, decorate with a pastry pencil.

Tips/Advice

After forming the mushroom strip, you need to put the shortcrust pastry in the fridge or freezer until it becomes very firm, otherwise you won’t be able to achieve the two-tone effect, as the shortcrust pastry will not hold its shape.
Once the shortcrust tube is assembled, put it back in the freezer, this will help you cut perfect slices.

With the leftover shortcrust pastry, you can make cookies.
