Wild Strawberries and Snake Strawberries Differences

in

For the column What It Is and How to Do It, today I’m talking about the difference between wild strawberries and snake strawberries. Both grow in the undergrowth, in humid, shaded, and cool places, and you often find them next to each other, which is why it is very important to learn to recognize and distinguish them. I recommend always picking fruits in areas with low pollution, away from roads and car exhaust fumes.

  • Cooking methods: No Cooking
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: Spring, Summer

Ingredients

  • 3.5 oz wild strawberries
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Steps

  • The Fragaria vesca is a perennial herbaceous plant, known as the wild strawberry plant. Its flowers are white with a yellow center.

  • The snake strawberry or Potentilla Indica has Asian origins and was imported to Italy by the Turin Botanical Garden in the 19th century as a botanical novelty to exhibit. Its flower has a distinctive yellow color.

  • Wild strawberries usually hang towards the ground, as their weight makes them turn downwards.

  • The snake strawberry grows straight up on the stem as if it were a flower.

  • Wild strawberries are usually small and elongated. Their surface is full of small seeds that can be white, pink, or red. When you pick them, they have a wonderful fragrance, and if you taste them, the flavor is delicious. You can enjoy them as is or with lemon juice and sugar.

  • Snake strawberries are not entirely edible, and while they can’t be called poisonous, eating them in large quantities can cause intestinal problems and diarrhea. The snake strawberry is larger and rounder than the wild strawberry and has tiny red protrusions instead of seeds. When you pick them, they have no pleasant smell.
