Tuna with Sweet and Sour Caramelized Onions

in

Today I propose a very simple dish to make based on the assumption that the combination of these 2 ingredients creates a truly exceptional taste, provided you like them! We are talking about tuna, which forms the base of the recipe topped finally with delicious sweet and sour onions.

I confess that I am madly in love with sweet and sour onions and I often find myself preparing them as a complement to other dishes and especially as a garnish for hamburger buns where they make a big difference.

Basically, the preparation of this tuna with onion is very easy because it is sufficient to sear the fillet on both sides and finally season it on the plate with plenty of onion. This will give the tuna the moisture it needs to make it less dry and then, the flavors together are a perfect match.

Ingredients

For the Tuna with Sweet and Sour Caramelized Onions

  • 2 slices tuna
  • 3 onions
  • as needed extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 espresso cup white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • a few mint leaves

Tools

  • Pots
  • Mandoline

Steps

To make the Tuna with Sweet and Sour Caramelized Onions

  • First, take the onions and remove the ends with a knife. Also remove the outer skin before proceeding to the next step.

  • Continue by taking a mandoline and slicing all the onions using the fine blade. Then collect all the sliced onions in a bowl.

  • Continue by heating a little extra virgin olive oil in a small pot, and once it reaches medium heat, add the onions. Stir occasionally and let cook until the onions are fully wilted.

  • Once wilted, proceed by adding the vinegar, then stir very well and let cook a few more minutes before discovering the next step.

  • After a few minutes, also add the sugar and, in the same way, continue stirring until all the sugar is completely dissolved.

  • To conclude the sweet and sour onion, let it cook a bit longer until the sugar starts to caramelize. Decide at this point the desired degree of doneness, as long as you don’t burn the onion.

  • At this point, heat a little extra virgin olive oil in a pan and place the tuna fillets inside, sear on both sides for about 3 minutes, and also add some salt during cooking.

  • To complete, continue cooking the fillet on the opposite side and ensure that the flame is not too low. Therefore, perform medium-high heat cooking.

  • Finally, once the desired doneness is reached, place the tuna fillet on a plate and garnish with plenty of previously prepared sweet and sour onions. Also, add a few fresh mint leaves for garnish.

Tip!

If using frozen tuna fillets, thaw them a few hours in the fridge beforehand.
