The club sandwich, or rather the clubhouse sandwich, is an American-origin sandwich prepared with toasted white bread and filled with turkey or chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise. In this sandwich, nothing is left to chance as the palate encounters layer after layer of all the ingredients. A sandwich whose name means “club sandwich” because it is composed of multiple layers, reminiscent of the floors of this type of building. Therefore, it is prepared by alternating each layer with the ingredients that compose it. Then it is cut into quarters or halves and held together by toothpicks.
The advantage of this recipe is that you use only one pan for the bread, bacon, and chicken, and not only that! In my version, I didn’t use oil, but just a small trick of cooking the bacon first. In this way, its fat will serve as a dressing for the meat, which will remain tender and tasty. It is true that melted butter is added to the white bread, and so this step certainly doesn’t make this recipe dietary. However, every now and then it’s nice to indulge a little satisfaction, and for this sandwich, it’s definitely worth it.
Perfect as a complete meal, this sandwich is easy and quick to prepare and can also be customized to your taste. You can indeed make a vegetarian version by putting a boiled egg instead of meat. Moreover, you can also replace mayonnaise with mustard and add avocado. Whether it’s for a picnic, breakfast, or a quick dinner, this rich sandwich pleased everyone when I made it. It’s also great as a fridge-cleaner recipe to recycle turkey and chicken leftovers. Who knows, maybe other versions might come along. Ingredients
- 6 slices sandwich bread
- 2 vine tomatoes
- 4 slices bacon
- 10.5 oz chicken (thin slices)
- 4 leaves Iceberg lettuce
- mayonnaise (to taste)
- 2.8 oz butter
Tools
- Pan
- Cutting Board
- Knife
- Toothpicks
Steps
With the quantities indicated above, you will get two club sandwiches, but let’s see now how to prepare them. First, brush a thin layer of softened or melted butter evenly on both sides of the bread slices. Then toast the bread slices in a non-stick pan for a couple of minutes on each side and set aside. In the same pan, brown the bacon slices, making them crispy for 2 or 3 minutes on each side. Once they are well browned, transfer them to a plate and pat them with absorbent paper. Always in the pan where you browned the bacon, now cook the chicken slices on both sides for 3 minutes. They will be ready when they no longer release their water. Once cooked, let them cool slightly. Now take care of the tomatoes and lettuce.
Wash the tomatoes well and cut them into very thin slices. Also wash the lettuce leaves and pat them with absorbent paper to remove any water left on the leaves after washing. Now it’s time to assemble the sandwich. Spread mayonnaise on all the bread slices and place a lettuce leaf on one of them. Add two slices of chicken, two slices of tomato, and a slice of bacon halved.
Place the bread slice with the mayonnaise side on the bacon and spread more mayonnaise on the top side. Then repeat all the previous steps, adding lettuce, chicken, tomatoes, and bacon, and place the last bread slice with the mayonnaise in contact with the ingredients. With the rest of the ingredients, proceed in the same way to prepare the second sandwich.
Stick two opposite corners of the sandwich with two toothpicks and cut it diagonally. In this way, you will get two halves. Serve the stuffed sandwich with chips and various sauces of your choice.
Variations and Tips
The club sandwich can be kept in the refrigerator for up to one day. For a vegetarian version, you can replace the meat with hard-boiled eggs. You can enrich the sandwich with hummus or replace mayonnaise with mustard.
