Savory Christmas Tree Danube

The savory Christmas tree Danube made of puff pastry is a simple and quick mini rustic perfect as an appetizer during Christmas lunches and dinners. A clever and striking idea, also ideal as a Christmas place card. Those who know me know that I love to prepare this type of dish for these occasions. Last year, for example, I made some puff pastry trees. A recipe just as simple and quick as the one I’m offering you today.

To make these delicious savory Christmas rustic treats, you will only need a roll of rectangular puff pastry and slices of bacon. Alternatively, you can also use ham or speck, but if you want a piece of advice, don’t use melting cheeses. The first time I tried to make them with this ingredient, my place cards deformed, and all the filling oozed out. If you really want to fill them with cheese, then I suggest making a larger Danube and serving it as a savory pie. The cooking was obviously done in a traditional oven, but nothing prevents you from using an air fryer to cook these rustic Christmas trees. A simple-to-make, delicious savory Christmas pie that you can also involve the little ones at home in the preparation. Now follow me to the kitchen, because the savory Christmas tree Danube will be ready in a click!

Ingredients

  • 1 roll puff pastry
  • 5.3 oz bacon (sliced)
  • 1 egg (for brushing)
  • poppy seeds (as needed)

Tools

  • Baking Tray
  • Knife
  • Brush

Steps

  • First, unroll the puff pastry and divide it into 1.5-inch squares. Then, place a slice of bacon on each pastry square. I used sliced bacon, but rolled bacon will work just as well. The important thing is that it is thinly sliced, so it will be easier to enclose the pastry.

Take each square and fold it into little balls. Then form the place cards by placing the balls you’ve just made in groups of 6 on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. You will get 8 Danube tree place cards.

Brush the surface of each mini Danube with beaten egg and sprinkle with poppy seeds.
