Steps for the preparation of braided butter bread

  • In the mixer, place the crumbled yeast (use half the amount if you want to use dry yeast). Add the sifted flour and milk. Start working with the mixer. Once the milk is absorbed, add the sugar, then the egg.

  • When the ingredients are well combined, add the melted, cooled butter and the salt. Once the dough is well mixed, round it with your hands and let it rise in a well-covered bowl. It will take about 2 hours, but it depends a lot on the rising temperature.

  • When the dough has risen, deflate it and divide it into 5 equal parts. Each will weigh about 7 oz. Form 5 strands and braid them. Making a 5-strand braid is not different from making a 3-strand braid. Join them at the top. Take the rightmost strand and put it in the middle of the other 4. Take the rightmost strand again and put it in the middle of the other 4. Continue to the end.

  • Let it rise. When it is well-risen, mix an egg yolk with milk. Brush the braid and bake in a static oven, at 356°F, for about 25 minutes. Let it cool before enjoying.

Storage

You can keep the braid under a glass dome for a couple of days. You can also freeze it.
