How to Make Potato Gratin Casserole
First, wash the potatoes, then boil them with the skin on for about 35 minutes. Test by piercing with a fork; they should be tender.
Once cooked, mash them with a potato masher into a bowl and add salt, Parmesan cheese, and eggs.
Pour half of the mixture into a buttered loaf pan sprinkled with breadcrumbs.
Fill with cooked ham and mozzarella and cover with the remaining mixture. Garnish with more breadcrumbs and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil; finally bake in a static oven at 350°F for 30 minutes.
Storage and Ideas for Potato Gratin Casserole
It can be stored in an airtight container until the next day. It can be frozen once cooked and completely cooled.
5 Variations to prepare the casserole: instead of cooked ham, you can use other cold cuts like speck, salami, or mortadella. You can add sautéed mushrooms or a diced vegetable mix. You can also replace the cheeses with fontina, taleggio, or gorgonzola for a more complex and strong flavor.
