Christmas Mini Apple and Hazelnut Tarts

The Christmas Mini Apple and Hazelnut Tarts are delightful little after-meal treats that are fragrant and delicious.

The recipe is actually very similar to that of the heart-shaped apple cookies, with the filling having the addition of hazelnuts that go perfectly with the apples.

Delicious and easy to make, especially if the shortcrust pastry is already prepared, the Christmas Mini Apple and Hazelnut Tarts can also become a sweet gift to give.

The idea originated from a crumpled page of a cooking magazine that I had preserved years ago between the pages of my famous red planner. But, amidst the many things to do and prepare during the Christmas season, it always eluded me. This year, however, I planned ahead and, thanks to my ready-made shortcrust pastry (because when I make it, I always freeze some), I baked these lovely mini tarts.

If you’re like me and love simple things and aromas that evoke “home,” this is the right recipe for you.

Ingredients

  • 8.8 oz apple
  • 0.7 oz granulated sugar
  • 1.1 oz hazelnuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.7 oz butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • granulated sugar

Tools

  • 6 Tart Molds

Steps

Make the shortcrust pastry following this recipe and use what you need; the rest can be frozen.

  • Peel the apple, cut it into cubes, and cook it in a pan with butter and sugar.

  • Add the cinnamon and let the juice from the apple pieces reduce during cooking. Then combine everything in a bowl with coarsely chopped hazelnuts.

  • Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and, using a cutter, cut out both the base and the top discs for the mini tarts. Line the molds (no need to grease), prick the bottom, and fill with the apple and hazelnut mixture.

  • Top each mini tart with a disc, seal the edges well, and brush the surface with a beaten egg yolk. Sprinkle with granulated sugar and place the tarts on a baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven for about 20 minutes at 356°F (180°C); they should turn golden.

Notes and Tips:

Instead of classic shortcrust pastry, try making the mini tarts with hazelnut pastry.

To make the tarts perfect, place the baking sheet in the fridge while the oven heats up.

Storage:

They keep at room temperature for no more than 4 days
