Variegated Custard Cream

With variegated custard cream it’s easy to impress!
Are you looking for a quick idea for Valentine’s Day?
Prepare the variegated custard cream! It’s a cute, sweet, fun, and economical idea.

The first thing to do is prepare the microwave custard cream or your favorite recipe; then you need a piping bag, a brush, and red food coloring, and in the blink of an eye, the variegated custard cream is ready to fill your favorite dessert.

For example, I filled puff pastry hearts and the surprise effect was a great success.

The important thing is to make an excellent cream!

And even if it seems that the coloring doesn’t adhere to the plastic of the piping bag, don’t worry because as soon as it comes into contact with the moisture of the cream, it will activate!

I suggest preparing the cream and hearts the day before, and on the day you want to use them, you only need to use the piping bag.

As I always say, sometimes it takes very little to impress, and with my variegated custard cream, I’m sure you will also make an impression!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg (whole)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp rice starch
  • vanilla (pod or extract)
  • food coloring (red powder diluted in a small amount of alcohol for desserts)
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (rectangular)
  • powdered sugar

Preparation of Variegated Custard Cream

After preparing the custard following the recipe found here or making your own and cooling it, proceed as follows:

  • – Pour half a teaspoon of food-grade alcohol into a small glass, add a pinch of red food coloring powder, and mix.

  • – Fit the piping bag with a star nozzle and, using a small brush dipped in red coloring, make lines inside the piping bag. Fill with the custard cream and squeeze.

  • – Unroll the puff pastry and use a heart-shaped cutter to cut out shapes. Poke holes in the surface with a fork and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for about 10 minutes.

  • – Turn on the oven grill and in the meantime, sprinkle the surfaces of the hearts with a little powdered sugar. Place under the grill for a few seconds (they should caramelize) and repeat the process on the other side.

  • – Fill the hearts with the variegated custard cream and serve.

Tips:

– By caramelizing them, the puff pastry hearts can be filled a couple of hours before serving without losing crispness. Instead of puff pastry, you can also use ready-made shortcrust pastry or make shortcrust pastry.

– With this technique, you can also color meringues or cream.

Notes:

– If you prepare the custard the day before, it will be firmer, so the striped effect will be perfect.

– The preparation and cooking times indicated in the recipe refer to the microwave-cooked custard. Using puff pastry hearts is optional, and the time is indicated in the procedure.
