The hot chocolate cream for breakfast is so thick, indulgent and easy to make that preparing it in the morning is a breeze.
For me it has become the little morning treat I give myself at least once a week, to enjoy calmly and without hurry.
Making it is really simple because you just need to put the milk and the powders in a small pot, stir, and then continue cooking on the stovetop over low heat until you reach your preferred consistency. The final decoration with chopped nuts and, sometimes, chocolate chips is the perfect finishing touch to start the day off right. Just enjoy it with a fruit of your choice or some berries and you’ll be good until lunchtime.
I discovered this recipe, which is very similar to the hot chocolate we all know, on a recipe app and since then it has become one of my favorite breakfast recipes to make. After all, anyone who has followed me for a while knows: I love making breakfast, it’s very important to me.
And can we talk about the aroma that fills the kitchen?

Ingredients
- 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp oat milk (or another plant-based milk (about 200 ml))
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (lactose-free)
- 1 1/2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- chopped pistachios
- sliced almonds
- 1 square 70% dark chocolate (or chocolate chips)
Steps
Pour the plant-based milk and the cocoa into the milk jug or a small saucepan.
Add 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, or more to taste.
Also add the cornstarch and stir to fully incorporate the powders. Turn on the stovetop to medium-low and cook the cream, stirring continuously to remove any lumps and to prevent the cream from sticking to the bottom. It will take about 5–6 minutes, depending on the quantity.
Turn off the heat and pour the hot chocolate cream for breakfast into cups.
Decorate the surface with chopped pistachios and sliced almonds, then enjoy.
Tips
The hot chocolate cream can be prepared the night before and stored in the fridge covered with plastic wrap. The next day, simply thin it with a very small amount of milk and warm it on the stovetop. It will be like freshly made.
