Christmas Tozzetti

in ,

The Christmas tozzetti are Christmas cookies similar to cantucci, but softer, without eggs and butter, with raisins, candied fruit, and almonds, reminiscent of the taste and aroma of panettone. These delicious and fragrant cookies are perfect for Christmas and New Year celebrations, ideal for placing in the Befana stocking or giving as gifts. If you use lactose-free or plant-based milk, they are also perfect for those intolerant to lactose, eggs, or for vegans if using plant-based milk. They are prepared in a few minutes and are delicious on their own and great for dipping in vin santo, passito, or a fortified wine, but also in milk, cappuccino, or a nice mug of hot chocolate. My husband loved them and practically ate them all himself 😀

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Economical
  • Preparation time: 10 Minutes
  • Portions: About 25-30 Christmas tozzetti
  • Cooking methods: Oven, Electric oven
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: Winter

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup candied fruit
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 3/4 cup almonds
  • 1/3 cup raisins
  • 2 1/2 tbsp milk
  • 2 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Half packet baking powder
  • 1 orange zest
  • 1 pinch salt
  • to taste vanilla

Steps

  • Christmas tozzetti are very simple and quick to prepare. First, soak the raisins in cold water to rehydrate them.

  • In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and a pinch of salt, and mix with a fork.

  • Add the grated orange zest and juice, milk, vegetable oil, vanilla, and form a soft and homogeneous mixture. Then incorporate the almonds (I used unpeeled ones), well-drained raisins, and candied fruit.

  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface and divide it in half. Form two logs and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  • Bake the logs in a preheated oven at 356°F for about 30 minutes until golden.

  • After the baking time, take out the logs, let them cool slightly, and cut them into pieces about 3/4 inch thick. Bake the Christmas tozzetti for another 5 minutes, just to dry them a bit.

Notes:

The Christmas tozzetti can be stored at room temperature for up to a week. If you do not want to use candied fruit and/or raisins, you can substitute them with more raisins/candied fruit or almonds (or other dried fruit of your choice), always respecting the quantities indicated in the recipe. You can replace the orange juice with milk and vice versa.
