Crispy savory pinwheels are an easy, quick and delightful appetizer or main course made with rice paper sheets. I bought them at the supermarket to make spring rolls, then I couldn’t find one ingredient and decided to make these crispy savory pinwheels with what I had at home. How tasty! The crispy savory pinwheels can be made in just a few minutes and you can cook them in the oven, in a pan, or in an air fryer (as I did). In no time and with just a few ingredients they will save your dinner; they’re delicious and super melty, and, of course, you can stuff them however you prefer, also in vegetarian and vegan versions!
- Difficulty: Easy
- Cost: Budget-friendly
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Portions: 4 pieces
- Cooking methods: Oven, Air fryer, Stovetop
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: All seasons
Ingredients
- 2 2/3 cups scamorza cheese
- 7 oz salami
- 12 sheets rice paper
- 1 egg
- as needed water
- as needed poppy seeds
Steps
Crispy savory pinwheels are very simple and extremely quick to prepare. First, grate the scamorza using a coarse grater (the one you use for cheese shavings).
Pour a little water into a plate and quickly wet 3 rice paper sheets on both sides, then place them side by side with a slight overlap.
Fill with a few slices of salami and some grated scamorza, roll gently and form a pinwheel. Do this fairly quickly because rice paper sheets, once moistened, tend to be a bit sticky. If your work surface is not non-stick, I recommend greasing it with a little oil.
Make all the pinwheels this way, brush them with beaten egg, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and cook them in the air fryer at 392°F for 20 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking; or bake in a preheated oven at 392°F for 25 minutes; or cook in a lightly oiled pan for 5-7 minutes per side.
Tips:
Crispy savory pinwheels can be kept at room temperature for a few hours or refrigerated for a couple of days. You can stuff them with whatever ingredients you prefer, including vegetarian and vegan options.
