The ladyfingers and custard brick is prepared in a few minutes and is perfect to enjoy on any occasion, for breakfast, snack, or after a meal, it strongly resembles the classic grandma’s brick, with custard and cookies!

- Rest time: 3 Hours
- Preparation time: 15 Minutes
- Portions: 8-10 inches mold
- Cooking methods: Stovetop
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: Spring, Summer, and Fall
Ingredients
- 3 cups milk
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 3 egg yolks
- 3 packages ladyfingers (about 30 pieces)
- 1 lemon zest
- as needed milk (to soak the cookies)
- as needed unsweetened cocoa powder
Steps
● The ladyfingers and custard brick is very simple and quick to prepare. First, line a mold with plastic wrap and cover the base and sides with ladyfingers dipped, only on one side, in milk. Wet the ‘sugared’ side and keep it facing upward.
● Then prepare the custard: in a saucepan, put the milk, sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks and mix until there are no lumps. Add the whole lemon zest and, stirring, bring the custard to a boil, continue cooking for a couple of minutes.
● Remove the lemon zest and pour the custard over the cookies, cover the filling with another layer of cookies, dipped in milk, halfway (this time wet the unsugared side and keep it facing upward).
● Seal the dessert with the help of plastic wrap, gently compact it, and place it in the fridge to rest for at least 3-4 hours. It needs to cool and firm up well.
● Carefully unmold the ladyfingers and custard brick, garnish it with a sprinkle of unsweetened cocoa powder, slice it, and serve.
Notes:
The ladyfingers and custard brick keeps in the fridge for 3-4 days. If you prefer, you can also soak the cookies in milk and cocoa, milk and coffee, or even just coffee, slightly sweetened.
