The New Year’s savory firecrackers are an easy, quick, and super tasty appetizer, perfect for the New Year’s Eve dinner or lunch. I called them this way because they look just like firecrackers, fireworks, rockets, just like those that are set off on New Year’s Eve night to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new. I never buy real firecrackers, and this year, inspired by the savory candy canes I made for Christmas, I decided to cook these, much better, I would say 😀 The New Year’s savory firecrackers are prepared in 10 minutes with only 4 ingredients: puff pastry, hot dogs, cheese, and eggs for brushing. They’re simple and tasty, perfect even for New Year’s Eve aperitif, and you can make them either larger or smaller!
- Difficulty: Easy
- Cost: Economic
- Preparation time: 10 Minutes
- Portions: 9 Pieces
- Cooking methods: Oven, Electric Oven, Air Fryer
- Cuisine: Italian
- Seasonality: New Year, New Year’s Eve
Ingredients
- 9 large hot dogs
- 1 roll puff pastry (rectangular)
- 1 egg
- to taste seeds as desired
- 8.8 oz provolone cheese
Steps
The New Year’s savory firecrackers are very simple and quick to prepare. First, unroll the puff pastry sheet and cut it horizontally into 9 strips, each about 1.2 inches wide (to make them all equal, measure the pastry and divide by 9).
Poke the hot dogs with a toothpick and wrap them, one at a time, in a strip of pastry, leaving a little space so the sausage is visible.
Place the hot dogs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, brush them with beaten egg, add some sesame and poppy seeds, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 25 minutes, until golden brown.
Meanwhile, cut the provolone into slices about 0.2 inches thick and, with a star-shaped cutter, cut out 9 stars.
Skewer the stars with a toothpick and place them on the tip of each hot dog, creating all the New Year’s savory firecrackers.
Tips:
The New Year’s savory firecrackers can be kept at room temperature for a few hours or in the fridge for a couple of days. If you prefer, you can also use smaller hot dogs; in this case, you will need 12 and you should cut the pastry vertically, always into strips about 1.2 inches wide. Instead of hot dogs, you can use classic sausages; if they are too thick, I recommend cooking them a bit first in the oven, in a pan, or in an air fryer.
