Sweet Puff Pastry Donuts

The sweet puff pastry donuts are amazing treats, crispy with a creamy filling. I had two rolls of puff pastry and a pack of mascarpone to use, so I decided to make delicious and fragrant little donuts, filled with a luscious mascarpone and Nutella cream. Needless to say, they disappeared in a flash! The sweet puff pastry donuts are made in just a few minutes and are absolutely delightful, perfect for breakfast, a snack, or even for a party. With the scraps, you can make mini treats that you can eat in one bite!

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Cheap
  • Cooking methods: Oven, Electric oven, Air fryer
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients

  • 8.8 oz mascarpone
  • 5.3 oz Nutella
  • 2 rolls puff pastry (rectangular)
  • 1 egg
  • to taste sliced almonds
  • to taste powdered sugar

Steps

  • The sweet puff pastry donuts are very simple and quick to prepare. First, unroll a sheet of pastry and, using a round cutter (mine was 4 inches), cut out circles. With a smaller cutter (mine was 2 inches), make a hole in the center. Do the same with the second roll of puff pastry.

  • Arrange both the donuts and the small circles on a baking tray, brush them with beaten egg, and add sliced almonds on just half of them.

  • Bake the pastries in a preheated oven at 356°F for about 20 minutes until they are golden. Meanwhile, prepare the filling: in a bowl, mix the mascarpone and Nutella, then transfer the filling to a piping bag with a star nozzle.

  • As soon as the donuts are baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool. Take a donut without almonds and fill the inside by making swirls with the cream, then close with an almond-topped donut.

  • Fill the small circles the same way. Finish the sweet puff pastry donuts with a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

Tips:

The sweet puff pastry donuts can be stored in the fridge for a couple of days. Once filled and refrigerated, it’s normal for them to lose some crispness. If you want to prepare them in advance or serve them crunchy, make the donuts and the cream and fill them just before serving. Instead of almonds, you can use other nuts or nothing at all. You can fill them with your preferred filling. With the scraps, I made some savory snacks with prosciutto, brushing them with egg, adding sesame seeds, and baking them. You can also cook everything in an air fryer at 340°F for 15-20 minutes.
