Soft and Fragrant Heart-Shaped Fried Donuts – Perfect Recipe for Carnival and Valentine’s Day

in , , ,

This year I couldn’t decide…
Carnival treat or Valentine’s treat?
So I did what I always do in the kitchen: I combined the two things 😊
This is how these heart-shaped fried donuts were born, soft and fluffy, light as a cloud. I made them in the afternoon and I’ll just say that they disappeared while still warm… my husband took “just two” at least four times 😄
If you want to make them too, I’ll explain everything step by step. They are very simple to prepare. For convenience, I used the stand mixer, but they can easily be made by hand.

Here are some more ideas for Carnival if you feel like frying;

  • Difficulty: Very easy
  • Cost: Economical
  • Rest time: 4 Hours
  • Preparation time: 10 Minutes
  • Portions: 20Pieces
  • Cooking methods: Frying
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: Carnival, Valentine's Day

Ingredients

  • 4 cups cups Manitoba flour
  • 1 cup cup milk
  • 3 tbsp tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp tsp fresh yeast
  • 3.5 tbsp tbsp lard
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1 egg
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • zest of 1 orange
  • 8.5 cups cups seed oil
  • as needed granulated sugar

Tools

  • Rolling Pin
  • Stand Mixer
  • Kneading Board
  • Scraper
  • Pan for frying
  • Absorbent Paper
  • Bowl
  • Cutter

Steps

  • In the bowl of the stand mixer, pour all the ingredients except for the milk and yeast.

  • Start mixing on low speed, in the meantime dissolve the yeast in the milk and gradually add it to the dough.

  • Work until the dough detaches from the sides.

  • Form a ball and let it rise in a warm place for about 3 hours until it doubles in volume.

  • Once the dough has risen, transfer it to the floured kneading board.

  • Roll it out with the rolling pin and shape the donuts.

  • Let the donuts rest for an hour before frying them.

  • Fry in hot oil for a few minutes on each side.

  • Roll them in granulated sugar and enjoy.

Fry them at not too high a temperature, otherwise they will color too quickly on the outside and remain raw inside.
If you want, you can fill them with cream or Nutella… but even plain with sugar they are wonderful.
