Mulberry Liqueur

Today I am sharing the recipe for making homemade mulberry liqueur or mulberry rosolio. The preparation is very simple, and after the maceration days have passed, it only takes 10 minutes to mix all the ingredients and bottle your liqueur, which can be stored in the fridge or freezer. Unfortunately, if you have to buy the mulberries, they are not very cheap, but it is worth it. I am lucky to have a mulberry tree in my garden, and every year I enjoy the wonderful fruits and also make the liqueur and the mulberry granita, a Sicilian specialty.

Mulberries are small, juicy fruits with a black-reddish color and a sweet taste. They are very similar in appearance and nutritional content to blackberries.

  • Gently wash the mulberries and let them dry by placing them on paper towels, then remove the stems, put them in a glass jar, and add the alcohol.

  • Close the jar with the lid and let it macerate for 7 days in a dark place away from heat sources, such as a pantry. Once or twice a day, shake the container to promote the infusion process; you’ll see the liquid become more colored, and the mulberries will lighten.

After the infusion days, prepare the syrup: put the water and sugar in a saucepan, stir and bring to a boil. As soon as the water is about to boil, the sugar will be completely dissolved, then remove from heat and let it cool.

    preparing sugar syrup
  • Filter the alcohol flavored with mulberries by letting it drip into a bowl, then filter again through the sieve lined with cheesecloth.

    strain the mulberries
  • Add the now cold sugar syrup and mix well.

    Mulberry Liqueur preparation
  • Bottle the liqueur and store it in the fridge.

Allow the mulberry liqueur to mature in the fridge for at least 15 days before enjoying it.

Notes

Mulberries stain a lot, so wear a pair of gloves.
